'Enough' et 'too'

Too = in a higher degree ( negative) too + adjective.

For example : The porter cannot lift the box. It is very heavy.

---> The box is too heavy for the porter to lift.

: The soup is very hot. I can't eat it.

---> The soup is too hot to eat.

Enough = (quantity) as much as needed ( positive) Adjective + enough.

For example : Marc is quite clever. He understands perfectly.

---> Marc is clever enough to understand perfectly.

: You are quite old. You can rely on yourself.

---> You are old enough to rely on yourself.

Enough / Too / Very

I : ENOUGH

enough : assez, suffisamment

1. Lorsque ce mot est un adverbe il se place après l'adjectif , l'adverbe ou le verbe qu'il modifie.

This man can't lift the weights, he isn't ' strong enough ' (strong: adjectif)

( il n'est pas assez fort )

Bob is a fast runner, he ran ' fast enough ' to win the race. ( fast: adverbe)

( il a couru suffisamment vite pour gagner la course)

I think Tom didn't ' sleep enough ' last night (sleep: verbe) (je pense que Tom n'a pas suffisamment dormi la nuit dernière)

2. Ce mot peut être placé devant un nom, c'est alors un déterminant.

Don't go to to the baker's, we have 'enough bread ' for dinner.

In my opinion there aren't 'enough books ' in the new library.

le nom qui suit enough doit être un indénombrable (bread) ou un pluriel (books)

on ne peut pas dire: there isn't 'enough book'

II: TOO

too : trop c'est un adverbe, il se place devant l'adjectif ou l'adverbe qu'il modifie.

This music is 'too loud' (loud: adjectif) (cette musique est trop forte)

Your daughter looks pale, don't you think she works 'too hard' (hard: adverbe)

remarque:

enough et too + adjectif peuvent être suivis de 'for' (pour quelqu'un, quelque chose)

this coffee is too sweet for me

you are not experienced enough for this kind of job.

III : VERY

very : très adverbe, il se place devant l'adjectif ou l'adverbe qu'il renforce.

It is 'very cold' today This smiley speaks 'very quickly'

noter la différence:

The smiley speaks very quickly : c'est une constatation

The smiley speaks too quickly : sous-entendu 'pour que je puisse le comprendre'

Mark walks too fast (je ne peux pas le suivre; il marche trop vite pour moi)

Mark walks very fast : c'est un fait
