Mr. Lizotte This Boy’s Life – Research Project and Presentation
The purpose of this research project is for us to develop an understanding of Tobias Wolff, of America in the 1950s, and of the past attitudes regarding gender roles, domestic violence, and parenting and ways in which they relate to This Boy’s Life.
The Research You and your partners must have a minimum of 6 sources (in addition to This Boy’s Life) from which to draw information. Your group is required to have: 3 Print Sources (Book or Online Reference Text) 3 Online Sources (Credible Websites such as .edu, .org, .gov) or Nonfiction Books. Each of you must cite your own sources using a shared NoodleTools project. Sources will need to be chosen for relevance and value of information based on the given topic – if it interests you, it will interest us. I encourage you to scan, photocopy, print, or otherwise save your information so you can access it over the course of the week and beyond if necessary. You need to organize your information as you identify and select it and as you process it in your own words. Selected information must be read and re-read for understanding. I encourage you to highlight and annotate your sources. Take lots of notes.
Creating Google Slides for Presentations o Your presentation must open with a title slide. Look for commonalities among your assigned topics when considering what to title your section. o Each group must create 6 informative slides (2 slides minimum for each topic assigned). o Each informative slide must contain the following: A visual image like a photograph or artwork that enhances the audience’s understanding of the topic; A direct quotation of material from the book source or a direct quotation from the online source (slide A / slide B); An accurate full citation in MLA format for the quoted source placed at the bottom of the slide. o Each group must also create a minimum of 3 slides sharing ways in which the assigned topics relate to This Boy’s Life. o Each of the relational slides must contain the following: Specific ways in which the assigned topic relates to the memoir; A direct quotation from This Boy’s Life displaying the relationship; An accurate full citation in MLA format for the quoted material placed at the bottom of the slide. o Type and font can be individualized, but visual quality must be considered, and quoted material must be larger than the citation.
Adhere to the following: 1. Keep your slides organized and visually appealing. Do not clutter your slides by choosing awkward themes or overlapping material. 2. Keep the information focused and legible. Do not select colors that make visibility and reading difficult for the audience. 3. Limit quotes of text and bulleted point notes in your slides as talking points. Do not overcrowd your slides with too much information.
The Technology . Google Presentations is the preferred platform because you can easily share work between partners and with the teacher. Please save your presentation in the following format: Period Topic Names. For example, you might list “Period 4 Movie Stars Mr. Lizotte.” Make sure you share it with me in Google so I can easily open it and add feedback. You must get permission to use other platforms such as PowerPoint or Prezi.
The Presentation Must be 10-12 minutes in length. Must flow smoothly – order, transitions between subtopics, explain connections. All presenters must share the workload of the presentation. Presentation must provide students with valuable and relevant information. Presenters must maintain eye contact with audience. Presenters must speak clearly and audibly.
Due Date Presentations must be shared with me before class begins on Tuesday, October 18. All groups should be ready to present that day.
