WHAT IS PSO?
Puget Sound Outdoors (PSO) is the University of Puget Sound’s outdoor program. It is one of the most highly involved organizations on campus, with over 250 students going on trips every year —and countless more utilizing gear rentals at the Expeditionary, the Climbing Wall, and the Bike and Skate Shop right here on campus. PSO is committed to empowering students through outdoor experience, and is unique in its “student- centered” approach: all trips are student-led, the Climbing Wall is student-run, the Bike & Skate Shop is student-led, and every semester students have the opportunity to gain outdoor leadership skills in our Outdoor Leadership Experience (OLE) course.

Leadership Experience Includes formal, and informal experience training June 15 – August 15, 2007 Summer Camp Counselor, Camp Sanborn, Florissant, CO Responsible for the development and activities for a cabin of 12 young ten year old princess warriors. Each day I led activities for my cabin and other cabins. I also co-led an overnight camping trip.
January – July 2008 Vice President of Sustainability Club at Grant High School, Boise ID I helped to form this club and created the first energy audit of our high school. Then we targeted the two largest areas of consumption and created marketing campaigns to impact these areas.
Trips Hiking, camping, backpacking, canoeing, xc skiing, surfing, climbing, etc. Date Trip, Location, Time of year, Conditions, Organizer/leader July 5th-8th 2003 Canoe trip on Lake Superior, MI Organized by Paddling Michigan Guiding Company. Conditions were calm, sunny, and warm. With dad and twin brother, Luke.
October 11th 2004 Day hike in White Mountains (Mt. Washington), NH Organized by friends. Conditions were windy, rainy, and cold. We had to set up a makeshift shelter to stay warm at lunch. With three rebel friends.
January 18th-25th 2007 Hut trip on Mt. Rainier (MTTA), WA Organized by Puget Sound Outdoors. Conditions ranged from sunny to snowy and cold. Accompanied by two leaders, and eight participants. Sasquatch sighted.
Formal Training June 17th-August 16th 2009 Camp Orkila (YMCA) Counselor- Orcas Island, WA Led 10-18 year olds sea kayaking in the San Juan Islands. Conditions varied from sunny and warm to windy, cold and rainy. Administered epinephrine to one student. Camp directors: Chew Bacca & Hans Olo. Current Certifications CPR, First Aid, Water Safety, Food Handler’s Permits, etc.
September 8th 2010 Babysitting CPR Course in Chicago, IL Organized by American Heart Association. Child and Adult CPR included in certification. Expires September 2012.

Outdoor Program Coordinators Overview Program coordinators are responsible for working with student leaders to organize weekend overnight and day trips, outdoor leadership and skills trainings, and working together with other clubs and branches of the outdoor community on campus (i.e. climbing wall, bike shop, kayak club) to generate both a wide variety of opportunities for students to get outside and foster a welcoming outdoor-oriented community. The mission is to conduct adventure-based experiential education courses designed to support students’ growth in integrity, leadership, social awareness, and an appreciation of diverse ways of knowing and being. Student leaders have an opportunity to develop leadership, decision-making, and outdoor skills, as well as enhance their understanding of the relationship of people with each other and with nature. The position as a program coordinator requires adept communication skills, organization, logistical planning, flexibility, patience, ability to conceptualize big picture plans, and a dedication to improving the program. The Outdoor Program Coordinators are in charge of many administrative and programmatic functions of the Outdoor Program. They report to and work closely with the Assistant Director of Student Activities for Outdoor Programs. Please see the official CES Job Description on Page 12.

Records Maintenance Keep records and evaluations of all trips and activities sponsored by the programs, including travel and other risk management documents Maintain a database of trip leader qualifications and experiences for risk management purposes Assist in compiling an annual report on Outdoor Programs Program activities for inclusion in the Student Development annual report

Position Description The Expeditionary/Bike Shop Finance Manager is a key leadership position that requires a high degree of responsibility in the area of small business accounting management. Strong emphasis is bookkeeping skills and accuracy, as well as excellent communication and university public relations.
The Expeditionary/Bike Shop Finance Manager reports to the Administrative Specialist for Residence Life and Student Activities and to the Assistant Dean of Students, Director of Student Activities & New Student Orientation.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities: (List the primary tasks, duties and responsibilities, not all duties. If the responsibility represents less than 5% of the job, do not list.)
Monitor all sales and rental revenue from Expeditionary and Bike/Skate Shop, PSO course offerings and trip fees, ski tickets and special events. Manage daily cash needs for the Expeditionary Reconcile revenue for daily deposits Provide monthly income reports for all Expeditionary revenue accounts Work with Administrative Specialist and/or Event Manager to provide end of event reports for all ticketed events Monitor opening and closing of the Expeditionary as it relates to daily revenue intake Assist in development of the staff handbook Train staff in the area of cash handling protocol (including but not limited to nightly deposits and safe management) Work effectively with Operations manager and participate in and attend weekly management team meetings Develop clear expectations and roles within area of responsibility Other duties as needed.

This job can fluctuate and the ability to handle changing situations is a necessity. The Expeditionary Finance manager is expected to make decisions without consulting a supervisor when working with customers and other student staff. What’s this, you may ask? This is a compilation of all your leadership and outdoors experiences. This includes anything and everything from family day hikes and camping trips to professional guiding experience or outdoor courses through NOLS/IWLS/Outward Bound, etc.—as well as previous leadership positions here at Puget Sound, from high school, or from outside employment/volunteer work that is not necessarily connected to the outdoors.
Why is it important, you may ask? First, it’s a good tool to reflect on your own experiences and what you learned from being in the outdoors, as well as a way to pinpoint places where you may need more experience. Second, PSO student coordinators should have a solid understanding of the fundamental skills and risks associated with outdoors, as they will be responsible for organizing trips, events, and trainings for their respective coordinator position.
A word on tailoring your experience log to the position(s) for which you are applying… Please include experience related to the position(s) for which you are applying. For example, include all previous bike shop volunteer or mechanic experience if you are applying to Bike Shop Coordinator.
