Journey to a Stamp

Journey To A Stamp:

The Aves Quest

Read all directions before starting. First of all, Ms. Tran will NOT be helping you with this journey. This is your personal quest. When you complete all requirements of the journey, you will have succeeded and deserve the ultimate reward: a STAMP! If you fail to complete your journey, you will be forever doomed to the disappointment of not receiving your reward…But be careful! The journey is treacherous and littered with mental obstacles that you must overcome. Most importantly, if you ask Ms. Tran a question that can be answered by reading the directions, she will ban you from the kingdom of Science and place you in her dungeon (the one with all Freshmen skeletons). Start when you are READY!

Preface: Before starting the activity, you must first find where the Class Aves can be found in your textbooks.

1. Turn to the next 2 blank pages in your Zoology notebooks.

2. Using a pencil, divide one page into 4 equally sized boxes. Number them 1-4(The lines need not be perfect, you don’t have time to spare!)

3. On the second blank page, divide it into 4 equally sized boxes. Number them 5-8.

4. In box number 1, name 2 groups that living birds are divided into. After naming these two groups, offer the latin translations of their phylogeny, and describe briefly their physical characteristics.

5. Skip to box 7. Paraphrase at 8 of the 11 characteristics of class aves the book has to offer.

6. Go to box 6. Draw the generalized bill, seed cracker, worm burrow probe, nut cracker, mud sifter, fish spear, meat tearer, and dip net. Make sure to label each drawing.

7. Move to box 4. In 3-4 sentences, describe the form and function of a high-lift wing. In another 3-4 sentences, compare and contrast the high-lift wing to the high-speed wing.

8. Move to box 2. Describe the two types of mating systems. In another sentence, state the difference between polygamy and polygyny.

9. Move to box 8. What is an unfortunate side affect of hunting? Explain in 3-4 complete sentences.

10. Skip to box 3. Get a foam dice. Roll it. Do whatever it says in the box.

11. Finally, go to box 5. Draw the cross-section of a hollow wing bone of a passerine (hint: what are characteristics of the order, passariformes?)

Congratulations! Give a fellow classmate a compliment on their academic prowess. Then, receive your stamp. Journey To A Stamp:
