Student Art Talent Contest 2011 Native Daughters of the Golden West - San Juan Bautista Parlor # 179 Two Dimensional Fine Art Contest 2011 Purpose : To encourage the interest of students and the general public in California landmarks and colorful history of California, around the theme "California Treasures." The contest is open to all students in grades 9 through 12 in any school in (County/area/district). Enrollment in an art class is not required. Guide Lines: California landmark - original artwork of a California historical location that may be a building or tree of historical significance or geological formation, ruin, site, or indigenous flora and fauna in its native habitat that have played a part in the history of California or is considered important as an indigenous species in California's history. California history - original illustration of an event or person or people, real or symbolic, which must portray an historical event or period in California. The artwork must be accompanied by an entry form that includes a brief description of the subject and the reason it is a significant historical landmark or historical event or period in California history. The entry may be prepared in class, with suggestions and input from others, but the artwork must be the artist's own. Limit is ONE entry per student. Type of medium s that may be used: Acrylic oil pastel water color charcoal pencil collage mixed media

Size requirements of entry, before framing or matting: Minimum = 8 inches by 10 inches Maximum = 20 inches by 30 inches

Preparation for exhibit: All images need one completed copy of the entry form attached to the back. All art works must be READY TO HANG, NO EXCEPTIONS!!! This means properly matted and/or framed and wired. If glass is needed, you must use PLEXI-GLASS or clear acrylic., not real glass. Acrylic and oil paintings do not need to be framed, unless there are staples showing, but show to better advantage if they are framed. If unframed, edges must be painted and presentable. Images must be representational and easily identifiable. Artworks not representing the good spirit of the contest, as determined by the Committee, will not be accepted. Student Art Talent Contest 2011 Native Daughters of the Golden West - San Juan Bautista Parlor # 179 2 Photography Contest 2011 Purpose: To encourage students and the general public in the natural beauty and preservation of the historic sites and park systems of California, around the theme "California Treasures." The contest is open to all students in grades 9 through 12 in any school in San Benito County. Enrollment in a photography class is not required. Subjects: Any historic site, park, natural monument (i.e.: Redwood or Joshua Trees, etc.), formation (i.e.: mountain range, desert dune, coastal outcrop, etc.) flora or fauna that contributes to the natural beauty of California The subject may be anywhere in California. Any photograph entered must have been taken by the student within two years prior to the contest deadline. Limit is ONE entry per student. Preparation for exhibit: All images need one completed copy of the entry form attached to the back. All works must be READY TO HANG. NO EXCEPTIONS!!! Photographs need to be securely and appropriately matted and framed, using PLEXI-GLASS, not real glass. Size requirements of prints (excluding borders, matting or framing): Minimum = 8 inches by 10 inches Maximum = 20 inches by 30 inches Prints may be color or black and white. Photographs must be realistic and the subject easily identifiable. Photographs not representing the good spirit of the contest, as determined by the Committee, will not be accepted.

Juror Guidelines and Awards (Theme: California Treasures) Each subordinate parlor may sponsor a local Fine Art Contest and/or Photography Contest and award prizes or certificates as the subordinate parlor budget provides. There will be a local, outside guest juror to select the artworks best suited for awards at both the local and state levels using a rubric with the below criteria.  adherence to theme (35% possible)  creativity (25% possible)  composition (25% possible)  workmanship (20%) possible Only the first place local parlor contest winners' works are submitted in the Grand Parlor competition at the Grand Parlor Annual Meeting in June 2011, from the subordinate parlor local contests. Local Parlor Awards will be issued in both Fine Arts and Photography:  First place...... $ 100 + ribbon for FA + GP $ 75 + ribbon for Photo + GP  Second place...$ 75 + ribbon for FA $ 50 + ribbon for Photo  Third place...... $ 50 + ribbon for FA $ 25 + ribbon for Photo

All entrants shall receive a certificate of participation. (+GP=opportunity to exhibit at the Grand Parlor level in June.) Local Parlor Level All original artworks and photographs are due by (TBD by local parlor: Month, day, time???) to the NDGW San Juan Bautista, # 179 Parlor), with prior arrangement. Please call at least 24 hours in advance to arrange for your drop off and pick-up to (Darlene Boyd at 623-2750.) The pick-up date is (date of presentation or by special arrangement), except for first place winners, whose works will be delivered to the state level NDGW contest. All winners will be invited to attend a presentation of awards at the (Month, day meeting at ADDRESS). First place winners will be contacted to pick up their works after June 30. Arrangements may be made by appointment for drop-off and pick up by contacting (Parlor Art Contest Chair, phone, email). Grand Parlor Level

All student art work entries and digital images for Grand Parlor (1st place winners from local parlors) must be submitted to the Darlene Boyd at [email protected] no later than April 30, to plan for display and create presentation materials. (There is a requested donation from each participating Parlor of $ 30 for up to 2 student entries to support the costs of this exhibit.)All work will be received on June 27, 2011 between 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Announcement of winners will take place on the evening of the 2nd day of GP. Pick-up of all works will happen on the last day of GP, between 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Grand Parlor Awards will be issued in both Fine Arts and Photography: Student Art Talent Contest 2011 Native Daughters of the Golden West - San Juan Bautista Parlor # 179  First place...... $ 100 + ribbon for FA $ 75 + ribbon for Photo  Second place...$ 75 + ribbon for FA $ 50 + ribbon for Photo  Third place...... $ 50 + ribbon for FA $ 25 + ribbon for Photo All student participants in the State Level will receive a Certificate of Participation. 4 ENTRY FORM - NEED 3 COPIES Please attach one copy of this form to the back of the work. Another copy is needed for contest registration and another for whoever is in charge of delivery and pick up. Incomplete entry requirements as specified or entries later than (month, day, year) deadline, will result in rejection of the work to the Student Art Contest.
