APFCB-MACB CHEMICAL PATHOLOGY COURSE This APFCB-MACB Chemical Pathology Course is an intermediary course in Chemical Pathology/Clinical Biochemistry that is jointly organised by the APFCB and MACB. The objective of the course is to provide updates of knowledge for clinical laboratory personnel. The 2-day course will consist of lectures and case studies. Dr Tony Badrick, the Chair of the APFCB Committee for Education and Laboratory Management is the Course Coordinator and the person in-charge of the teaching programme. This course is suitable for pathologists, laboratory scientists, technologists and students working in the field of Chemical Pathology. Lectures will be provided by local and overseas speakers who have vast experience in the field.

SPEAKERS Dr Tony Badrick, B. App Sc, BSc, BA, M Lit St (Math), MBA, PhD(QUT), PhD(UQ), FAIMS, FAACB, FACB, FAIM, Member Aust Maths Soc, FRCPA (Hon), FFSc (RCPA). He was Associate Professor, Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine at Bond University for 4 years before becoming the CEO of the RCPAQAP in 2015. In the twenty-one years from 1990, he was Manager of the Biochemistry Department and then Laboratory Manager at Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology, Brisbane. Between 1973 and 1990, he worked at the Biochemistry Department of the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane.

He was President of the Australasian Association of Clinical Biochemists (2003-2007), is Chair of the Education and Laboratory Management Committee of the Asian Pacific Federation of Clinical Biochemistry, Vice President of the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists and currently the deputy Chief Examiner and Chair of the Faculty of Science of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia.

Dr. Loh Tze Ping is from Penang, Malaysia. He now works as a consultant Chemical Pathologist at the National University Hospital, Singapore. He teaches various topics related to Chemical Pathology/Laboratory Medicine to polytechnic students, undergraduate medical students and postgraduate trainees. Associate Professor Dr. Pavai Sthaneshwar is consultant Chemical Pathologist at Division of Laboratory Medicine, University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC). She graduated with MBBS from Madras University, India and obtained her MD from Dr MGR Medical University Madras, India. Her areas of expertise include Clinical Chemistry and Inborn Errors of Metabolism. She has special interest in Method Validation & Verification. She has nearly 20 years of experience in teaching in the area of Clinical Chemistry. As an academician, she is involved in teaching and coaching the MBBS first degree and post-graduate candidates at University of Malaya.

Dr. Tengku Norita Tengku Yazid, MBBS (University of Malaya, 1992, Master of Pathology (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, 1999). She is a Consultant Chemical Pathologist & Head of Pathology Department, Hospital Selayang, Selangor state Chemical Pathologist and state QA Committee for Pathology Service. She is a Technical Assessor (Chemical Pathology) for MS ISO 15189 under Standards Malaysia and a member of Technical Working Groups to review the Specific Criteria SC1, SC2 and STR2.3 for MS ISO 15189.

Dr. Mimi Azura Aziz is a Pathologist (Haematology) with the Ministry of Health, Malaysia. She did her specialty training in Haematology at Hospital University Kebangsaan Malaysia and is currently attached to the Pathology Department of Hospital Kuala Lumpur. Her main research has been on haemopoietic stem cells and she is a committee member for the preparation of National Standards for Collection, Processing, Storage and Infusion of Haemopoietic Stem Cells and Therapeutic Cells.

Ms Chen Bee Chin, Biomedical Sciences degree, UKM (1998), M.Sc. in Medical Sciences, University of Malaya, 2008. She is the Senior Biochemist and Unit Head of Biochemical Genetics, Dept. of Genetics, Kuala Lumpur Hospital. She is a certified Safety and Health Officer and was appointed as Safety and Health Officer in the Department, and an active committee member for society OSH HKL. An active member of the Malaysian Association of Clinical Biochemists (MACB), Society of Clinical Genetics, Society of Inborn Errors of Metabolism (IEM), Occupational Safety and Health Society, Society of Scientific Officer, and International Society of Newborn Screening (Asia-Pacific). She was trained in laboratory diagnosis of Inborn Errors of Metabolism (IEM) at Heidelberg University in Germany, Nijmegan Medical Centre in Netherlands and in other institutions and has established many new IEM services for the hospitals.

Ms Yusnita Yakob is currently the Head of Molecular Diagnostics & Protein Unit, Specialised Diagnostics Centre at the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) Kuala Lumpur. She had obtained her MSc in Molecular Medicine from UKM Molecular Biology Institute (UMBI). She has 15 years’ experience in the field of molecular diagnostics for Inborn Errors of Metabolism, including mitochondrial and rare genetic disorders. Her contributions include the development of molecular genetics testing for Mitochondrial Disorders, Urea Cycle Defect, Alagille Syndrome and many more. She is also a senior researcher and is actively involved in collaborative research projects, and the current one is looking at potential biomarkers for mitochondrial respiratory chain disorders associated with mitochondrial neurological diseases.

Associate Professor Dr. Siti Balkhis Budin, M.D. (UKM), MSc. (Ulster University, UK), PhD (UKM). She was previously the Head of the Biomedical Sciences Programme in the Faculty of Health Sciences, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and lectures in many courses related to Pathology at the Bachelor and Masters levels. Her specialty is in Pathology and Toxicology. She has received several grants to conduct research in free radicals and antioxidants, diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases and in reproductive toxicology and has published more than 100 research papers. She has also been active in giving talks and advice at community level activities organised by various NGOs and government departments.

Kris Lam graduated from Australian Catholic University as a Registered Nurse and practiced nursing in Melbourne for three years. Being proficient in IT, he joined Australia’s leading for-profit clinical-care operating systems Autumn Care, where he acquired hands-on experience in the development and selling of electronic medical record and other clinical software. He later joined two healthcare technology start-ups before joining Siemens Healthineers as a healthcare informatics specialist. As a Registered Nurse with experience working in IT companies, he is deeply passionate about improving hospital work flows through the usage of innovate software solutions.
