Video Workshop Homework Assignment

Video Workshop Homework Assignment Due Saturday, October 22, 2016

Please make sure to complete assignment A before moving on to B.

A. In the “General Portfolio Instructions” read “Recording Video Entries for Component 3” section.

B. Video ONE lesson that could be used for one of your videos for Component 3. It should be 10- 15 minutes in length. For most of you, National Board is asking you to “identify two lessons for which you will provide information about your instructional planning and choice of materials and will capture video that shows evidence of your teaching practice, the learning environment, and student engagement.”

Bring a laptop, save your video to a flashdrive, save to Google Docs, or upload to YouTube (or similar), so that others may review in small groups. While we understand that this lesson may not be the one you submit to the National Board, it is important that you begin videoing to acclimate your students (and yourself) to the process and to figure out logistically how you should set up your camera, microphone, etc. We also will ask you to answer some of the questions as explained below. Please do not try to complete the entire Written Commentary; doing so will probably overwhelm you. This may not be the actual video that you will turn in for your portfolio, but we want you to take the great leap and attempt it anyway. Please focus on the requirements of your lesson and focus on most of the elements required in the instructions (Example: Your instructions may require the use of technology, in a lesson about math and science in a whole class lesson. You should create a video that is a whole class lesson, uses technology and is about math or science, but maybe not both. This is an attempt at getting the work completed, not making it perfect.) Come in prepared to discuss your written questions with a fellow candidate, and to share some of your video.

Here’s the breakdown of what we want you to do in B: 1. Record a lesson that you think fits your idea of component 3.

2. Following the National Board formatting rules, answer two questions from your written commentary or writing about planning sections for component 3. Please only choose 1 of these options:

Option 1: Answer Questions 1 and 2 in the “What to Include in your Written Commentary” section. Your questions might be different but we want you to answer the questions about your specific strategies and instructional decisions. For example:

Option 2: Answer Questions 3 and 4 in the “Writing about Planning” section of Component 3. The questions should have something to do with your instructional goals. For example:

3. Bring in a COPY of your VIDEO cued to the 5 minute segment that you want your colleagues to watch and your WRITTEN COMMENTARY to the workshop. Please put your flashdrive in an envelope with your name and school division clearly labeled on the envelope and the device. Once your colleagues have had the opportunity to view your video, you can submit your homework.

4. Remember to type in bold print the actual questions you are answering in your written commentary. These will be deleted in your final draft, but the person who reads your entry will need to see the questions to which you are responding.

5. Bring in highlighters of various colors as we will identify descriptive, analytical, and reflective writing in our commentaries and in the commentaries of others. Bring all of the forms you have completed for each entry.

6. Always bring your Portfolio Instructions, Standards, and homework to each meeting.

Submitting Homework for Feedback:

 You will submit the written portion of your homework to your division NBC email for feedback from Ryan and Serra. Bring an additional copy to the workshop for use during activities.

 In the body of your email to us, please let us know how you will be submitting your video. You either need to state that you will be submitting a flash drive in person when you come to the workshop, OR you need to provide us with a link or shared file so that we may access your video via the web.

o If you are bringing a flash drive, please place this in a sealed envelope with your name and school division written on the outside. You will submit this during the workshop once you have finished the video viewing group activity with your colleagues.
