One Division of World S Parliamentary Debate, Breaking to Semifinals

June 30, 2014 Dear Friends,

We invite you to attend the 22nd Jack Lynch Invitational Debate and Speech Tournament on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at St. Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire. We will offer World’s Parliamentary Debate, Lincoln Douglas Debate, and 11 Individual Events, all within a one-day tournament. Tournament highlights:  One division of World’s Parliamentary Debate, breaking to semifinals.  Open LD Debate will have 4 preliminary rounds, breaking to semifinals.  Novice LD Debate will feature 2 workshops, 4 prelim rounds and 1 final round.  We will offer all 11 IE events. There will be 2 prelim rounds in all events and final rounds in events with 12 or more speakers.  The final rounds of Novice LD, Open LD and World’s Parliamentary will take place in the North Lounge as audience debates (one after the other), to be immediately followed by the Awards ceremony. This one-day schedule will allow schools who have a long drive or flight home to get home on Sunday, and local schools can return home on Saturday night. If you are flying, Manchester-Boston Regional airport is conveniently located about 10 miles from the college. All of the major airlines fly into the Manchester-Boston Regional airport. Please let us know if we can help you in any way. We look forward to seeing you in November. Sincerely yours,

David Trumble Director of Debate St. Anselm College Manchester, NH

Tournament Summary 1. Worlds Parliamentary division. We will offer four rounds of World’s Parliamentary debate in an Open division. We will break to semifinals. 2. LD Open division: We will offer four rounds of NFA Lincoln-Douglas debate in an Open division. We will break to semifinals. 3. LD Novice division: This division is designed for students for whom this is their first semester of competitive debate experience (whether it is high school or college debate). Novices will have two debate workshops ("Stock Issues" and "2014-2015 Topic Analysis") to start the day. The novices will then have four preliminary rounds of competition followed by a final round. 4. IE: We will follow NFA guidelines. We will offer two preliminary rounds in all events. Our general guideline will be to hold a final round if there are at least 12 competitors in prelims.

Food Nutritious food awaits you Saturday morning. A quality continental breakfast (fresh fruit, baked goods, juice and coffee) will be provided. The breakfast is included in the fees. Good and inexpensive food is available in the college cafeteria for lunch. The cafeteria is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Registration Please register by Monday, November 3 at 9 p.m. This registration deadline will allow us to prepare for the tournament and have the pairings and brackets ready to go when you arrive. Please register via e-mail at: [email protected]. E-mail entries will be confirmed. We will confirm all registration information when you check in on Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. in the Cushing Center. Tab Room The tab room will be run by a group of coaches from the Northeast region. We appreciate their work in running the tournament. At present, the tab room will be run by: LD: Heather Erickson, Director of Forensics at Emerson College John Boyer, Director of Debate at Lafayette College

IE: Jodi Nevola, Director of Forensics at Suffolk University Scott Placke, Director of Forensics at Lafayette College

Worlds: Scott Thomson, Director of Forensics at Ithaca College Susan Miskelly, Director of Forensics at Bridgewater State University Lisa Heller Boragine, Director of Forensics at Cape Cod Community College NFA LD Topic We will be using the 2014-2015 NFA LD topic and the NFA LD Rules as approved by the NFA at the Nationals in April 2013. The specific resolution has yet to be announced, but it is within the topic area of US Space Policy. Trophies Debate: Trophies will be awarded to all debaters who advance to the elimination rounds. This includes open division of LD, novice division of LD, and World’s parliamentary. Also, we will provide trophies to the top five speakers in LD Open, the top three speakers in novice LD and the top five speakers in World’s parliamentary. IE: Trophies will be awarded to the top three speakers in each Individual Event. Also, we will provide trophies to the top three students in Triathlon. To be eligible for Triathlon, a student must enter at least three IE events. Their top three IE events will be counted. There are no rules regarding which particular events the student must enter to be eligible (e.g. limited prep, interpretation, platform speaking). Sweepstakes: We will offer Team Sweepstakes Awards to the top five schools in IE, the top five schools in Debate (combined LD and World’s) and also the top community college overall. Jack Lynch Debater Award: This award was started in 2011 in honor of Professor John “Jack” Lynch, who started the debate team at St. Anselm College in 1948 and coached for 46 years. It will go to a debater who best exemplifies the values of education and integrity. We will ask each debater and judge to cast one vote for a debater (not from their own school), someone who works hard, knows their material, respects the activity and personifies the idea that how you play the game is more important than winning or losing. Lodging There are several nice hotels in the Manchester area. There are hotels in downtown Manchester, on South Willow Street, and near the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. All three locations are about 15 minutes from the College. Judges Judges will be used in either the debate judging pool or the IE judging pool throughout the preliminary rounds. Please bring your own judges. If you have alumni or other friends of forensics who can travel with you and would like to be hired judges for the day, please let us know. If they can stay for the whole day, we will pay $120. Debate: One debate judge who is available for four preliminary rounds and one elimination round will cover two LD debaters. For World’s parliamentary, the judging requirements will be based on an N-1 system. For example, if you bring 3 teams, you will need 2 judges.

IE: Each full time IE judge covers 6 slots. Judges are available at a cost of $10 per uncovered slot.

Hired Judges: We are very fortunate to have a pool of qualified hired judges (alumni and friends of forensics) who live in the Boston-New Hampshire-Maine area. We want to make sure they are accessible to every school on an equal basis. We will make hired judges available to schools on a first-come basis, with an initial limit of one hired per school. If you would like to hire a judge, please contact David Trumble by email at [email protected].
