IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME Luke 22:1-38
INTRODUCTON: While most Christians have a vague understanding of the symbolism of what we call the “Lord’s Supper,” few believers understand how Jesus transformed the most important meal in Jewish life into a way to remember the most important event in human history.
I. The Betrayal Preceding The Passover (Luke 22:1-6)
Luke 22:1-3 1“Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was approaching. 2 And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how they might put Him to death; for they were afraid of the people. 3And Satan entered into Judas who was called Iscariot, belonging to the number of the twelve.”
Luke 22:4-6 4“And he went away and discussed with the chief priests and officers how he might betray Him to them. 5 And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. 6 and he consented, and began seeking a good opportunity to betray Him to them apart from the multitude.”
II. The Observance Of The Passover (Luke 22:7-30)
A. The Preparation For The Meal (Luke 22:7-13)
Luke 22:7-9 7 “Then came the first day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 And He sent Peter and John, saying, ‘Go and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat it.’ 9 And they said to Him, ‘Where do You want us to prepare it?’”
Luke 22:13 “And they departed and found everything just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.”
1 B. The Partaking Of The Meal (Luke 22:14-23)
1. The Significance Of The Entire Passover Meal (Luke 22:14-18)

Luke 22:14 “And when the hour had come He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him.”
Luke 22:15-16 15 “And He said to them, ‘I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you, I shall never again eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.’”
2. The Meaning Of The Bread (Luke 22:19)
Luke 22:19 “And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.’”
Hebrews 10:5-7 5 “Therefore, when He comes into the world, He says, ‘SACRIFICE AND OFFERING THOU HAST NOT DESIRED, BUT A BODY THOU HAST PREPARED FOR ME; 6 IN WHOLE BURNT OFFERINGS AND SACRIFICES FOR SIN THOU HAST TAKEN NO PLEASURE.’ 7 THEN I SAID, ‘BEHOLD, I HAVE COME (IN THE ROLL OF THE BOOK IT IS WRITTEN OF ME) TO DO THY WILL, O GOD.’”
2 3. The Meaning Of The Cup (Luke 22:20)
Luke 22:20 “And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, ‘This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.’”
Hebrews 10:1-4 1“For the Law, since it has only a shadow of the good things to come and not the very form of things, can never by the same sacrifices year by year, which they offer continually, make perfect those who draw near. 2 Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have had consciousness of sins? 3 But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year by year. 4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.”
Exodus 12:13 “And the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.”
Romans 8:1 “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
III. The Purpose Of The Passover (Luke 22:18-32)
Luke 22:19-20 19“And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.’ 20 And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, ‘This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.’”
2 Corinthians 5:21 “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
Luke 22:31-32 31 “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat; 32 but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.”
