University Faculty Senate Student Affairs Committee Minutes September 20, 2016 a) Call to order Senator James McElwaine ([email protected])called to order the regular meeting of the UFS Student Affairs Committee at 5:03pm on September 20, 2016 at CUNY Central, 205 East 42nd Street. b) Roll call: Present were: Professors Vera Albrecht (LaG), Margaret Carson (BMCC), Bill Crain (CCNY), Kenya Harris (BCC), Jane Katz (JJ), Kimora (JJ), LaRoi Lawton (BCC), Gene Mann (QCC), Julie Trachman (HCC), and the Exec. Comm. Liaison Hugo Fernandez (LaG). Stasia Pasela (UFS Staff) also attended. c) Approval of minutes from last meeting The agenda & Annual Report from May 2016 were admitted in place of minutes from the last Student Affairs meeting. d) Open issues e) An agenda change was requested by a committee member to begin the meeting with a brief discussion of tuition increases. The Committee accepted. [See New Business below]

f) Senator Fernandez agreed to serve as Student Election Review Committee delegate from the UFS.

g) Discussion of review of the Revised Master Plan continued from last spring. The committee agreed to review the latest draft and forward commentary to Senators Lawton and Crain for further consideration, then to Chair McElwaine. Special attention is to be paid to the particular issues of current financial practices associated with registration and early registration that adversely affect timely student enrollment, section cancellations and reinstatements, and unintentional damage to student mentoring. [See note under New Business, below.] Master Plan Review will also potentially impact Strategic Plan formulation.

h) Attendance of UFS Student Affairs Committee continues at USS plenaries with two current senators attending each one. Senator Fernandez indicated that attendance by other senators is possible. First USS plenary is at Guttman Community College, 50 West 40th Street, NYC, Sunday, September 25th, 12n to 5p. Attending senators will forward a brief synopsis to chair for distribution. i) Establishing mentoring for various CUNY student governance associations was discussed. The committee agreed to invite USS Vice Chair Donovan Borington to the October 25th meeting to discuss his current survey findings about local campus governance needs and preferences, in order to enable better construction of mentoring services by the UFS.

j) The expansion of emergency services for needy students and staff was discussed, particularly the administration of the Petrie Foundation emergency grants on each campus. The committee agreed that this program was not well known by students at most campuses. Senators agreed to inquire about the emergency loan mechanisms at their home campuses and to explore how to better inform students about available options. Senators should forward their local procedures for compilation by the Chair. They will also inquire with their local financial aid or Single Stop offices how to maximize student awareness.

k) A series of upcoming student research and creative endeavor symposia has received support from IVC for Student Affairs Chris Rosa. Currently, a steering committee is being formed from senior administration, faculty, and staff from University Academic Affairs, Student Affairs and University Research. Current planning is looking at five symposia across calendar year 2017. The Chair will forward information as it develops to committee members. The Chair will also forward a set tentative symposia practices and aspirations. l) New business a) The possibility of tuition increase was discussed. Although the financial impact on students is often devastating, the committee agreed that the actual increases being mandated are beyond this committee’s purview. However, the committee will pursue further student opinions about possible committee opposition to tuition increase. m) Adjournment The committee adjourned at 6:05 p.m.
