X-ray Guided Core Biopsy (Stereo)

The mammogram machine (x-ray) will be used to guide the Radiologist to the correct area of breast tissue that needs to be sampled. The mammogram machine is used as sometimes the tissue sample needed is not visible on ultrasound.

Why do I need this test? This test is performed so that this area of breast tissue can be looked at more closely in order to make a diagnosis.

What happens during the procedure? You will be stripped to the waist down and placed in either a sitting or lying position Your breasts will then be compressed by the mammogram machine for the duration of the procedure. This may cause some slight discomfort The radiologist will then use the mammogram machine to guide them to the correct area that needs to be biopsied. A local anaesthetic will be given to the area to make it numb before the biopsy is taken Several biopsy samples will be taken It is very important that you stay still during the procedure

Results The doctor referring you for the test will make you an appointment for the results.

Please contact the referring doctor or you GP should this continue. Exercise Rest on the day of the biopsy and avoid any heavy lifting or other heavy jobs.
