Answers and instructions Globalisation quiz This quiz (available to download separately from this issue’s GeographyReviewExtras) is designed for classroom use. It could be used:

 as a ‘starter’ activity to see what students already know about globalisation or as a quiz at the end of the topic

 as a ‘team quiz’ just for fun, but to try and reinforce some key terminology and concepts The quiz is marked out of 10.The answers are provided below along with some additional information designed to promote further discussion in the classroom. Answers 1 The correct answer is D, WiFi. The term was first used in 1998 and it became common by the early 2000s. The first generation iPhone was launched in 2007, whereas Twitter launched in July 2006. The first 4G mobile networks started in 2008. 2 The correct answer is A, feet. Containers are essentially a US invention and by the 1970s had become standardised in feet, specifically using the units TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). Modern containers are mostly 20 feet or 40 feet long, and 8 feet wide. There are over 20 million containers in the world. 3 The correct answer is C, Walmart (which owns the UK brand Asda). It had 2.1 million employees in 2015. McDonald’s employed 1.9 million people. More people worked for Walmart in 2015 than lived in Latvia, Slovenia, Bahrain or Bhutan. 4 The correct answer is B, China Mobile. A state-owned company, it is the world’s largest mobile phone company measured by subscribers, with over 800 million people on its network in 2015. 5 The correct answer is C, Finland. It had an internet population penetration of 97% in 2014, compared to 92% in South Korea, 91% in Japan and 87% in the USA. In the UK the figure was 90%. 6 The correct answer is B. This was the date of the first commercial flight of the UK built de Havilland Comet, which launched the ‘jet age’. The first satellite was launched in 1957 (Sputnik 1) and the first mobile phone call was made in 1973 (the ‘mobile’ phone weighed more than 1 kilogram). 7 The correct answer is C, 300. This can be seen as a measure of demographic ‘mixing’ in a globalised world where migration is more common than ever. The number of languages exceeds the number of countries in the world due to local languages and dialects. 8 The correct answer is A, the world’s migrant population would be the fifth largest country in the world — a little smaller than Indonesia at 255 million in 2015 and a little bigger than Brazil at 205 million in 2015.

Trade is at the centre of most definitions of globalisation and the rapid growth in world trade in the last 50 years is one of its defining characteristics. 10 The correct answer is D, OPEC. OPEC is an international organisation set up in 1961 to influence world oil prices by manipulating oil production in member states, whereas the other three organisations are trade blocs with varying degrees of free trade (free of tariffs, taxes and quotas) between trade bloc members.
