Piedmont IB Middle School
School Leadership Team Minutes
Monday, March 3, 2014
Attending: Jackie Barone, Principal; Renee’ Leak, Recorder; Shanequa Sellers, Elle Westover, Maranda Thornburg, Aleta Worrelle, Ronny Reddig, Erika Gantt, Michelle Price, Meredith Hall, Clark Davis
Jackie Barone began meeting with updates from last meeting
Survey results (about workload, projects, etc.) have not come in very well due to being sent out as a link in the weekly announcements, but Barone is planning to resend the survey through teachers within a week/very soon—there have only been 17 respondents thus far
http://piedmontnews.cmswiki.wikispaces.net/Morning +Announcements--this is the link now on the Piedmont wiki page for all to see Morning Announcements
School NC Report Cards went home last week and there is no new data to share
Mid-quarter reports go out this week for those students making below C’s in classes and all math teachers will be sending one home to communicate community and service hours information
1st Lottery has run in CMS and assignment letters will be going out this week---parents can go in NC PowerSchool and see what is assigned
Registration is underway for next year and is occurring in March/April—6th & 7th grade cards go out today and all are due back Thursday, 3/6/14
6th Grade team went to Biltmore House last Friday and it was a great trip
7th Grade goes to Washington, DC March 26-28, 2014
8th Grade will be going to Outerbanks soon for their trip
Piedmont does not have a specific direct feeder IB high school, but any students wishing to continue in the IB program have a guaranteed seat based on where you live—there are 13 different HS for our students to select from (include IB, Home school, or different schools)
Piedmont usually has 25+ students from Irwin and all other students are invited to attend registration nights as opposed to visiting each school to register
All high schools will be coming to Piedmont for high school registration (this has to be done on the cards and it will be changed in the computer later) There was a suggestion to have or hold a session with 8th grade parents in the beginning of the year or at some point to advise them about 13 high schools and how this process works—it is not as seamless as elementary to middle/Piedmont
Ms. Giallombardo (8th grade Counselor) has begun sending Connect Ed messages out to parents as reminders
There are some high schools who have allowed parents access or advised them how to go in and complete their child’s schedule in PowerSchool—this varies from school to school, but is occurring at North Mecklenburg
CMS is trying to get rid of the paper registration process and move to Power Scheduler
Other concerns/Questions:
Tax ID# to use for Piedmont for Fund Raising—is it possible to get Piedmont’s? Other schools provide this information per a parent—Barone will check on this and get back to parents
Question about consistency for counting IB Assessments as grades—all were advised the IB Criterion does not average in to grades, but they can be a formal or informal grade, but it really should be an exempt grade and most teachers use it this way usually
Videos in classes with certain subject matter—question about possibility of viewing the videos in advance I.e. guns/gun safety, smoking, alcohol—all were advised the videos shown in class are CMS approved---a generic letter is sent home to advise parents videos will be shown—this was discussed due to one parent’s child being upset about video content
Barone advised all teachers/Ms. Marshall work closely with Counselors if there are any concerns or follow-up/ to help with any sensitivity with students
Meeting was adjourned
Next SLT Meeting: Monday, April 7, 2014
