ETHEL M. BOLDEN 12 OF COLUMBIA FOR HER NUMEROUS CONTRIBUTIONS 13 TO CIVIC AND EDUCATIONAL ENDEAVORS IN THE 14 COLUMBIA AREA AND HER TIRELESS SUPPORT OF THE 15 RICHLAND COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY. 16 17 Whereas, Mrs. Ethel M. Bolden has been an ardent supporter of 18 the Richland County Public Library system since she began 19 serving on the Board of Trustees in 1977; and 20 21 Whereas, Ethel Bolden was born in Charleston and moved to 22 Columbia at the age of three. She attended Booker T. Washington 23 High School, Barber Scotia Junior College in Concord, North 24 Carolina, and Johnson C. Smith in Charlotte; and 25 26 Whereas, Mrs. Bolden began teaching in Columbia and received 27 her Masters Degree in Library Science in 1959. She served as a 28 teacher and librarian in the Columbia public schools for thirty-nine 29 years before retiring in 1982; and 30 31 Whereas, Mrs. Bolden established the first black elementary 32 school library at Waverly Elementary School and went on to 33 establish libraries in other black elementary schools until all but 34 three schools had libraries; and 35 36 Whereas, to promote library education, Mrs. Bolden taught 37 librarians at Allen University, Benedict College, South Carolina 38 State University, Columbia College, and the University of South 39 Carolina; and 40 41 Whereas, she was an active member of the Board of Trustees of 42 the Richland County Public Library from 1977 to 1982 and again

1 [1271] 1 1 from 1984 until her retirement in 1995. She made significant 2 contributions in many capacities and was deeply involved in the 3 library expansion program completed in 1993; and 4 5 Whereas, Mrs. Bolden has served on or held leadership positions 6 in numerous boards and committees of organizations such as the 7 State Librarian’s Division of the Palmetto Education Association, 8 Friends of the State Museum, City of Columbia Citizens Advisory 9 Committee, and YMCA; and 10 11 Whereas, because of her involvement and generosity, this lovely 12 lady has received a myriad of awards and honors including listings 13 in several Who’s Who editions, the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority 14 “Golden Years Award” for outstanding life-long community 15 service, the Columbia Urban League’s Award Achievement in the 16 area of black history programs, Carver Elementary School’s 17 Community Service Award, March of Dimes Ten Women of 18 Achievement, the Woodrow Wilson Pinnacle Award from the 19 Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce, and many more; and 20 21 Whereas, she was married to the late Charles Bolden, a devoted 22 teacher and football coach, and they have two fine sons, Charles 23 Bolden, Jr., and Warren Bolden; and 24 25 Whereas, it is with great pleasure and admiration that the members 26 of the Senate recognize and thank Ethel M. Bolden for her 27 wonderful civic and community leadership in Columbia, for her 28 ardent support of educational programs in Columbia, and for her 29 dedication to the Richland County Public Library; and 30 31 Whereas, the members of the Senate, by this resolution, are 32 desirous of publicly recognizing this outstanding lady for her 33 leadership and commitment to quality library services which have 34 made the Midlands a better place. Now, therefore, 35 36 Be it resolved by the Senate: 37 38 That the members of the Senate recognize and commend Mrs. 39 Ethel M. Bolden of Columbia for her numerous contributions to 40 civic and educational endeavors in the Columbia area and for her 41 tireless support of the Richland County Public Library. 42
