Only minutes ago Langdon had listened to her phone message thinking the cryptographer must be insane. Do not react to this message. Just listen. You are in danger now. Follow my directions. Filled with uncertainty, Langdon had decided to do as Sophie advised. He told the inspector who was questioning him that the phone message was regarding a friend back home. Then he had asked to use the toilet at the end of the corridor. Now he stood beside her.

Extract 2 - Taken and adapted from Notes on a Scandal by Zoë Heller (2003) The other night at dinner, Sheila talked about the first time she and the boy kissed. I had heard most of it before, of course, but this time something came up. I happened to ask her if anything about the embrace had surprised her. She laughed. Yes, the smell of the whole thing had been surprising, she said. She hadn’t expected his odour and if she had, she would probably have guessed at something teenagey: bubble gum, cola, feet … But what she had actually inhaled was soap and laundry.
