EICCD and Iowa’s Community College System

Values of the Iowa Community College System:  Access & Opportunity. EICCD maintains an open-door policy for all of its diverse citizens, to provide high quality educational programs, which are affordable, and encourage lifelong learning.  Responsiveness. Flexibility in response to economic change, population change, technological advances, and changing needs of business and industry.  Collaborative Relationships. Connections with all levels of educational sectors, business & industry, and governmental entities.  Local Control and Shared Responsibility.

The Community College System in Iowa is a division of the Iowa Dept. of Education.

EICCD has three main programs that involve full-time and adjunct teaching staff:  Arts & Sciences. This is the college transfer program whereby credits earned in these classes transfer to four-year colleges and universities. In some states this would be similar to the role of junior colleges. Degrees awarded are: Associate of Arts or Sciences (AA or AS)  Career & Technology Education. These are two-year technical degree programs that are geared to meet the on-going needs of Iowa’s business and industry. In some states this would be similar to Technical Colleges. Degrees awarded are Associates of Applied Sciences (AAS).

Among all jobs in the U.S. economy, those requiring associated degrees are projected to increase the fastest, by 32 percent through 2010

 College Preparation Developmental. Based on ACT, SAT, COMPASS, or other college entrance assessments, students may be counseled to take classes below the 100 level. These are called “Developmental” or “College Preparation” courses.
