Institute Management Team Meeting Thursday, October 4, 2012 Attending: Brian Anderson, Mike Demissie, Tom Emerson, Libby Johnston, Manohar Kulkarni, Don McKay, Gary Miller, Bill Shilts, Steve Wald, Angie Wisehart

1. Advisory Board Meeting Bill reported that an email went out the Board members reminding them of the meeting on November 1. Bill let the Directors know that if they have something that they want to report to the Board members they are welcome, but Bill would like to keep the Management Team’s participation to a minimum at the meeting. The Directors need to recommend one person from their Survey to give a lightning talk. Bill reported that Vice Chancellor Schiffer will be in attendance. Bill also reported that Fred Giertz (Interim Director, Institute of Government & Public Affairs) agreed to give a presentation to the Board. Bill will send a note to the Board informing them that Vice Chancellor Schiffer plans to attend, and to give them a description of the lightning talks when they are selected.

2. Prairie Lightning Symposium Gary reported that the call for speakers and poster presenters will be going out soon. There will be an emphasis on the importance of signing up for training for both talks and posters.

3. Spurlock Museum Advisory Board Bill reported that he attended his first Spurlock Advisory Board meeting. They are in the middle of a fundraising campaign to expand the museum. Bill has scheduled a meeting with the Director of the museum to discuss collections.

4. NGRREC Faculty Fellows Program Bill reported that Dick Warner met with him to discuss the NGRREC Faculty Fellows Program. Details about the program were distributed to the Directors. Bill told the Directors that if they would like to nominate anyone from their Survey to become a Fellow to let him know.

5. Desert Research Institute (DRI) Bill reported that the visit to DRI has been rescheduled to January. He, Gary and Brian will travel together.

6. INHS Update Brian reported that he will be leaving for Ireland tomorrow.

Brian reported that they are making plans to expand their conference room at Forbes.

Brian reported that he has been talking with University Press about storing the Survey’s unused publications. Brian is interested in publications for e-books, and knows someone at McGraw Publishing who can show him the software. He may look into this further. 7. Institute Fall Lecture Series Steve reported that he continues to promote the Andrew Revkin lecture on October 24. He distributed the flier at the meeting. A Facebook page and Linkedin page have been created.

Mr. Revkin will arrive at noon on the day of the talk, will have lunch with Bill and then meet with Steve Marshak and students (School of Earth, Society & Environment) before his talk. The next day he will tour the carbon sequestration site before he departs.

8. Summer Science Camps Steve indicated that Nancy Holm (ISTC) wanted confirmation that she should move forward and begin planning for the Institute Summer Science Camp. This is in follow-up to the idea being presented to the Management Team on August 30 by Nancy and Bob Coverdill (Associate Director, I-STEM). The Directors agreed that having proposed dates will help with planning. Steve will follow-up on proposed dates.

ACTION ITEM Steve will work with Nancy on proposed dates for summer camps in 2013.

9. ISGS Update Don reported that he was in the field for three days this week, and found a tooth and partial jaw bone belonging to a mastodon.

Don reported that he is working with Libby on the press release for the seismic data report. DOE needs to approve it before it goes out. The meeting to discuss and distribute the data will be next week at the headquarters of the Illinois Oil & Gas Association.

10. Applied Research Institute Gary reported that the Applied Research Institute is a new institute on campus. The Interim Director of the Institute (Bill Dick) will attend a future Management Team meeting to brief the Directors. The Institute will be located at the Research Park, and will house campus-wide applied research. The staff will be made up of Academic Professionals, no faculty. Gary believes because of the similarities there are real opportunities to build collaborations and staff with dual hires. Gary also reported that he would like to give Director Dick a tour of the Applied Research Lab and ISTC.

11. CAPE Awards Gary reported that the call for nominations has gone out for the CAPE Awards. Gary thinks it would be a good idea to nominate at least one person from the Institute every year. The deadline for nominations is October 29.

12. Institutional Advancement Meeting As a follow-up to last week’s discussion, Gary will forward the form provided by the Institutional Advancement office to be completed. The form is a tool to provide ideas that the Development Officers can use when approaching Foundations for possible funding. Gary asked the Directors to look the form over and consider what should be done with it. 13. 2013 Mini-Symposium Gary reported that the general consensus by the Symposium Planning Committee was to host another Mini-Symposium next year. The Symposium will be held at the Illini Union, but the Committee will request Illini Rooms A, B, and C, instead of only B and C. The Committee will continue to discuss what time of day the Symposium should take place.

14. ISAS Update Tom reported that some of his staff have been taking vacation time to provide technical expertise and digging at the Fort de Chartres location.

Tom reported that digging will be completed in East St. Louis at the end of October.

15. Institute Brochure Libby reported that she is continuing to work on the Institute brochure. If anyone has comments about the brochure, as it was printed for the Mini-Symposium, they should contact Libby.

16. ISTC Update Manohar reported that there will be two Mud-to-Parks press conferences – one in Chicago and one on Peoria. Details are not out yet.

Manohar reported that Greg Boswell (President of HOBI International), ISTC Seminar Series speaker, may be interested in a non-recycled plastics-to-oil project with ISTC.

17. ISWS Update Mike reported that he attended a meeting in St. Louis organized by the Army Corps of Engineers to discuss the Mississippi Watershed Initiative. A lot of people were in attendance. The General of the Corps was introduced in a video at the meeting.
