'Good' Ofsted report for Children's Services - The Children’s Services department at Nottingham City Council is celebrating after receiving an overall ‘Good’ rating by Ofsted. Inspectors spent a fortnight at the authority’s Loxley House base earlier in the year and were impressed with the effort that has taken place since the last inspection in 2014 and acknowledged the vital role of staff, who they described as passionate, enthusiastic and positive about their work. The report highlighted that:

 The diverse needs of children are well understood  Listening to the voice of the child across the Council’s work is a real strength  Children’s assessments are consistently good which lead to meaningful indicative plans

Nottingham was taking part in a pilot inspection by Ofsted and this will now be rolled out more widely across the country.

The Lord Mayor’s Attendance Awards 2017 - We’re only a week or so away from our annual party to celebrate the amazing pupils across Nottingham who have shown such commitment to attending school over the past year. The Lord Mayor’s Attendance Awards are once again being held at Harvey Hadden Leisure Centre* in Bilborough, on Thursday 13th July between 3.30pm and 5.30pm. There will be a variety of fun activities and games to try out, while the Lord Mayor of Nottingham, Councillor Michael Edwards, will be on hand to say thank you to the children and pose for photographs. If you haven’t yet dropped us a line with the names of the pupils from your school who will be coming, please do so in the next few days as we will be compiling a list of attendees. You can email [email protected] or if you have any other questions call 0115 876 3307.

*Please note that work is currently on-going to extend the car park at Harvey Hadden and, as a result, the overflow section will be closed on the day. This has left the venue with limited parking but there will be a temporary arrangement in place and attendants on hand to help. Please could you pass this message on to your chosen pupils and their parents. If they are able to car-share or use public transport that would be greatly appreciated, otherwise try to allow a little more time if possible.

Important advice on responding to terrorism - The horrific terrorist incidents that have taken place in London and Manchester over the last few weeks will have prompted many of us to think about how we would respond if we saw suspicious activity taking place or if we were unfortunate enough to be caught up in an attack. The likelihood of this happening is very low. There is no intelligence to suggest that Nottingham is a target for any terrorist activity and the council and its partners have worked hard over the years to keep Nottingham a safe place to live, work and visit. However, please take the time to read the important advice provided below on what do if you are caught up: http://bit.ly/2tBMJEB

For entry details please visit: http://bit.ly/2uBSZsX How to help children stay safe when using SnapMaps - Last week SnapChat, used regularly by many children and young people, launched a new feature. SnapMaps allows users to see the location of their contacts. This feature allows others to accurately pinpoint where you are. There are three possible privacy settings:

 Ghost mode, where only you can see your position;  My Friends mode, where any contact can see your location; and  Select Friends mode, just those who you choose can see you

ChildNet have posted a thorough explanation of SnapMaps and how to ensure users stay safe. Well worth a read to share with anyone you know who uses the app. Many safeguarding staff don't use these apps on a regular basis, if we are to protect children, we need to have at least a working knowledge of the risks and uses of such apps. Child Sexual Exploitation Training and SRE Support - The offer for schools to have CSE training delivered is still available up to the summer holidays and continuing in the new term. This workshop style training can be delivered as part of an inset day or twilight session whenever it is convenient for the school. It is suggested that secondary schools have a minimum of 2 hours and primary 1.5 hours if possible. So far, Trinity, Emmanuel, Djanogly Academy, NUAST and Ellis Guilford have all attended the workshop. CSE is an ongoing problem and school staff are key in picking up signs and indicators. There is also an offer of support to schools throughout the year with their SRE provision whether this is in an assembly, drop down day or when the school may be covering a particular topic area.
