Ch. 7 Cliffhanger – literary technique that leaves the reader in suspense Cliffhanger at the end of chapter 7 is Jonas was skipped!

Ch. 8 Qualities of a Receiver 1. Intelligence – Smart 2. Integrity – ethical principles or morals/honesty 3. Courage – Jonas needs courage because his training involves pain. 4. Wisdom – gained through personal experience 5. Capacity to See Beyond

Ch. 9 Jonas’ Rules 1. Go immediately at the end of school hours each day to the Annex entrance behind the House of the Old and present yourself to the attendant. 2. Go immediately to your dwelling at the conclusion of training hours each day. 3. From this moment, you are exempted from rules governing rudeness. You may ask any question of any citizen and you will receive answers. 4. Do not discuss your training with any other member of the community, including parents and elders. 5. From this moment, you are prohibited from dream-telling. 6. Except for illness or injury unrelated to your training, do not appy for any medication. 7. You are not permitted to apply for release. 8. You may lie.

Ch.10

Small wing attached to the Annex is the location of Jonas’ training. He trains exclusively with the current Receiver. Things that are unusual: * the attendant stands for Jonas * there are locks on the doors of the Annex *books * can turn the speaker to “off” * fancy furniture

Elsewhere - the rest of the world outside of their community

Receiver – most important member of the community that brings with it great honor

Transmit memories – Giver places his hand on Jonas’ back

Ch. 12 foreshadow – Giving the reader hints of something to come! We later learn that Jonas uses the sled experience to join “Elsewhere”. Capacity to See Beyond – Ability to see colors! Rainbow – all the colors of the spectrum! Rainbow – promise! Ch. 13 Choices – Jonas learns that there used to be choices….Choose your own mate? Color of a tunic? Choose your job? “Sameness”

Keeping a Memory Pretend that we are joining Jonas’ community and losing all memories, but you get to keep one. Write several paragraphs discussing and detailing the memory that you are going to keep forever!

Ch. 14 – Ch. 16 Jonas receives the painful memory of “warfare”.

On the line clues: gray uniform; field; cannons; horses; dying men; boy not much older than himself INFERENCE: Civil War

On the line clues: ribbons on the packages; red, green and yellow lights on a tree inside the house; cheers of delight when boxes are open INFERENCE: Christmas

The Giver’s favorite memory is love shown through Christmas.

1st lie to his parents: Jonas says he understands why the term “love” is obsolete.

Reason the community needs a Receiver: 1. Give advice or counsel 2. Carry the pain for others (martyr) Ch. 17

Unscheduled holiday; everyone was off of work; kids played ‘good guy/bad guy’; ‘Good Guy/Bad Guy’ – Jonas is infuriated at this game because it brought back the memory of warfare. It’s not a “game” at all. Jonas discussed that no one knows what he knows about anger.

Questions “Elsewhere”.

Process of releasing twins.

Has not taken the pill for four weeks.

Gabe starts walking. Tries to say his own name.

Ch. 18

Giver discusses the painful memories given to Rosemary (loss, loneliness, fear, hunger, terror, poverty). He discussed Rosemary’s release and how the memories went back to the people. If something were to happen to Jonas, the Giver could help the community. He loved Rosemary. Rosemary did not have the same rules as Jonas (she could apply for release). It broke the Giver’s heart to give her painful memories.

Ch. 19

Release – death by lethal injection

*Cycle of change of “release” in the novel: 1) Elsewhere – sadness or fear (punishment) because no one wants to leave the comfort of the community 2) ominous (foreshadowing evil) a. death b. others can lie 3)Elsewhere – restoring itself with a change – escape from physical and psychological hold of the community “The Elsewhere that held their future, and their past.” (ch. 23)

Ch. 20 Community does not have music! Rosemary is the Giver’s daughter! Plan of escape: *two weeks before the Ceremony, The Giver transmits memories of strength and courage

*Giver collects food for two weeks

*the night of the escape, Jonas writes a cheerful note for his parents

*Jonas leaves at midnight

*hides his bicycle and extra clothes by the river

*walks to the Annex (it will be unlocked)

*Giver orders a vehicle and driver

*his parents leave for the Ceremony (everyone assumes Jonas is with someone else)

*Jonas hides in the trunk with the bundle of food

*Ceremony begins

*they find his bike and clothes by the river assuming he’s drowned

*Giver returns to find the community confused and in panic

*Giver begins the Ceremony of Loss

*Giver helps the community deal with the memories

Ch. 21-23
