Princes Trust (signposting for learners for kit funding)

In order to attract funding for our courses, we contract with a range of providers (who charge a management fee). These include:  Consortia Training for apprenticeship courses in Derby and Scunthorpe,  Prostart Training, Long Eaton, for Traineeship courses.

Employers we liaise with and who provide work placement provision include:  Kieran Mullin Ltd. salons and personnel (see www.kieranmullin.co.uk)  The Tool Box  Orchid Beauty Salon run by KMT

Hairdressing and Barbering

All hairdressing courses are completed in-house and with our main employer placement partner, Kieran Mullin Ltd. We only offer hairdressing training within our own and KM organisations. Apprentices are recruited annually in Derby (>14).

KM currently have 11 salons and are increasingly moving into the Nottingham area and the Beauty/ Nail Services Industry. This offers an additional market for our services and has required increasing our partners to access funding in this area for Traineeship and Study Programmes.

Learning and Development

We will continue to offer Full Cost short courses as well as the Learning and Development Apprenticeship.

Beauty Therapy Market potential is for Full Cost Short Courses and Apprenticeships in Beauty Therapy. Apprenticeships continue to be a relatively new concept in Beauty and Nail Services.

C Major competitors – their prices, strengths and weaknesses The market for apprentice hairdressers is variable subject to the economic context. The customer has a continual demand. It is anticipated that due to more young people entering further education recruitment will become increasingly competitive with other local learning providers and there will be a larger number of learners applying who either do not have the qualifications to enter directly onto an apprenticeship course or who are aged 19+ and therefore attract lower funding for the same course. This is reflected in this year’s R&S. Current downturn (reflects other providers) In 2013 although applicant numbers were higher than in 2012, the profile of the applicants did not meet the apprenticeship requirements for KMT. Traineeships did not begin until August 2013 and many learners were reluctant to begin an unknown course which was unemployed as they had not received their GCSE results until the end of August. The result is a down turn of recruitment of learners this current year 2013-14. In relation to liaison with schools, we are aiming to develop our relationships with schools and offer learners tasters and work experience. We will continue to focus on and expand our partners in relation to work-based provision and increase collaboration with other like minded providers. Our current contractual obligations require that we take into consideration The Academy of Hair and Beauty who are also providers of Consortia Training, located nearby when recruiting new business employers to avoid any conflict of interest.

Hairdressing and Barbering

We will continue to only offer hairdressing and barbering training within our own and KM organisations or to any organization that is not already working with The Academy, Derby.

Customer Service, Retail and Business Management

Derby is a growing retail area with a demand for these services. However, many

TM 11-2013 V10 5 KMT Business Plan 2013 national companies have already got their in-house companies. SMES are likely to have been targeted by the other providers including Derby College who are proactively recruiting employers and learners. We will review our strategy for these learners in 2014.

Learning and Development

To some extent there are a wide range of course offered by Derby College and other on- line providers but none as we know within Derby City Centre. In 2013/14 we are continuing to develop our websites (KM and KMT) to attract additional learners/ clients.

Beauty Therapy Largely SMES for work placement providers. Providers of courses:  East Midlands College of Beauty  The Academy of Hair and Beauty  Derby College/ Roundhouse  Burton College. d Turnover expected in 2012/13 £ see cash flow analysis

Reasons why we can achieve our expected turnover: Learner recruits (Traineeships and Apprentices) have been profiled for 2013/4. To capitalise on our potential income generation we have undertaken the following initiatives: 1. undertaking projects and accessing additional funding through Jisc for disseminating EdNet. This has also improved our collaborative working. 2. maximising the learner potential by offering them additional courses/ units to help individual learners access additional skills through other add on courses such as barbering, customer service and AA. 3. for some learners higher qualifications are not appropriate due to their existing level of Functional Skills (Maths and English). However, they have been encouraged to undertake additional courses to upskill themselves in preparation for an advanced course. 4. increased our Traineeship/ pre-apprentice recruits in 16-18 and 19+. 5. develop our Nottingham Provision in 2014. 6. KM Training has begun recruitment Beauty Personnel but will not focus on Nail Services clients/ learners as from 2013. e Has our product or service been market tested? Yes No

Our main customer is the Kieran Mullin (KM) salon hairdressing group who regularly require intake of learners. KM Training is an employer provider working with the KM salon group which consists of eleven salons with over 100 personnel. KMT are the sole provider of training and co-ordinate with other partners such as Clynol, a hairdressing manufacturer, to provide updates to all staff including learners. We have a successful record of providing training confirmed by ALI Inspection Grade 2 results (Nov 04) and OFSTED Grade 2 (2007/8) continuous good recorded feedback from VTCT EVs and City & Guilds, our Awarding Bodies’, Quality Assurance visits. f Marketing and sales methods we plan to use including the costs involved: Marketing / Sales Method Cost On line- recruitment such as Gumtree £50 Special Promotions £600 Leaflets and Marketing (Vista Print, Internal Photocopying,) £1500 Telephone £1000 KM Website updates/ photographs £1500 Conferencing- variable £300+ per day g Buying Our major suppliers  Kieran Mullin Ltd. h Production or operation

Our methods of production or operation are described in more detail in our Quality Assurance Strategy. These included policies, procedures and evaluation in relation to management of the business, the learner journey and staffing. The annual self- assessment process and development plan is also included. Further information about KMT systems are recorded in the quality assurance systems online file and also held at Head Office

The range of learning opportunities currently offered are:-

 Apprenticeships (intermediate apprenticeships and advanced) in Hairdressing, Barbering and Customer Service, Beauty Therapy, Retail, Business Admin and Learning and Development  National Vocational Qualifications in Hairdressing, Barbering and Customer Service Beauty Therapy, Retail, Business Admin and Learning and Development  Functional Skills at levels 1 and 2.  Learning and Development Awards (includes Verifier and Assessor Awards and PTLLS, CTLLS & DTLLS* TBA).  Short courses in Beauty Therapy Treatments  Basic skills support converged with Functional Skills in order to promote the achievement of these within apprenticeship frameworks.  CPD opportunities for KMT staff and employer KM staff  ATS for Dyslexia Support (TM only)

Where appropriate some learners (and staff) have taken additional accredited qualifications such as ICT and Emergency First Aid, not required by their frameworks. In this way learners are encouraged to achieve their full potential.

IAG Qualifications Working with Ingeus, a local provider, the opportunity has arisen in November 2013 for some staff and associates to undergo units towards IAG NVQ level 3 and 4.WE are currently in the process of establishing appropriate units for staff and funding.

KM Training works closely with the employer to ensure that learners are working in a healthy and safe environment. Health and safety policies are updated and regularly reviewed and audited by a joint working party of company representatives.

For recruitment and selection of learners we work alongside the employer, schools and other partners such as Connexions, to ensure we are continuously widening participation and including all potential candidates. We are currently prevented from advertising directly on the NAS site as we are not a direct SFA contractor. Neither can any employer but the new

TM 11-2013 V10 7 KMT Business Plan 2013 document published in October 2013, ‘The Future of Apprenticeships in England’ suggests that this will be reviewed. Learners attend ‘Taster’ sessions to give them the opportunity to try out their career choice without full commitment before enrolling. Online promotion of tasters will increase in 2013/4.

Equality and Diversity issues have also been high on the agenda for joint development between KMT and KM. Initiatives such as the increase in case studies review and themed months to raise awareness, have been continuously introduced to increase awareness and monitoring of equal opportunities in the workplace and the impact of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. Numbers of males are still in a minority although this fluctuates.

KMT have changed our recruitment and selection material/ images to reflect these changes. This trend has continued to improve. Learners on all courses are able to access additional learner support (ALS/ ASN-Dyslexia support-counselling) and learners now receive specialist basic skills support where identified on all courses as appropriate. We have more information on our website and have increased the number of notice boards available in our centres. More detailed pro Equality and Diversity Monthly Themes and case reviews have been introduced as part of ILP reviews and charitable giving. A leaflet on the E&D Characteristics using ‘Mrs Sortpad’ has also been introduced as a means to remember these characteristics for staff and learners. Other leaflets have been developed and updated on courses and related issues and are used at interview and in induction.

Summary of Needs Analysis

Employer and Skill Requirements  Qualified salon staff to industry standards in subject areas  Work-based assessors on site  Mentors available for learners  Information Technology skilled personnel.

Barriers to learning  Social/ Personal- Many learners experience social and personal difficulties that prevent attendance and therefore learning. KM Training works with Connexions and individual local schools. Personal Advisors and provider partner staff to support young people in these circumstances to help them overcome these barriers. However, we recognise that some of these are outside of our remit as work-based learning providers.  Educational- KM Training have in place basic skills tutors to help learners overcome barriers to literacy or numeracy needs identified from initial assessment as appropriate.

SWOT Analysis: Opportunities and Threats to KM Training Provision

 + The government AGE Grant which offers employers £1500 to take a new apprentice on (ends March 2014). KM is not eligible as it takes on learners each year. KMT has been eligible as a new employer recruiter of apprentices.  + Project work for continuous improvement and funding.  +/- Opening/Closure/ location change of employer salons  +/- Apprenticeship legislation which is less flexible as to the duration of a framework is being reviewed in 2014.  - Non-acceptance of self-employed learners on courses (new legislation may change).  - Recruitment of 19+ learners which reduces income by 50% as opposed to the 16-18 guarantee group.  + Schools links need to be enhanced to maximize the current opportunity for recruitment following the Ofsted Report 2013 identifying IAG in schools as weak.

TM 11-2013 V10 8 KMT Business Plan 2013

All learners are considered on merit. KM Training and Kieran Mullin, the employer, value mature learner’s contribution to the workforce and would wish to consider widening participation in this occupational sector, which has traditionally been limited for older learners.

Development of the Curriculum

 Functional Skills are now part of the apprenticeship framework. Staff training has already taken place and many staff have already completed the FS qualifications.

 Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills- the curriculum is embedded within the vocational element of the course but a PLTS log, captures the evidence explicitly. Pre and post course evaluation captures the self-assessed development of the learner.

 Citizenship activities have already been developed for use within the learners‘ programmes at KMT including the recycling game which support awareness in the salon and the PSD which increases awareness of personal development.

 Learners, as part of the salon activities, regularly take part in fund raising for charity in National events as a local level such as Red Nose Day, The Pink Campaign for Breast Cancer and Children in Need amongst others.

TM 11-2013 V10 9 KMT Business Plan 2013  The Customer Service qualification is a programme designed for Receptionists working within in the salon group as appropriate.

 With the increase in barbering skills required in relation to creating patterns, in-house staff development has been offered to staff in order to increase capacity in this area. This is in addition to the Clynol colouring CPD development offered annually.

 Emergency First Aid awareness courses continue to be offered to staff and learners as appropriate. This may be offered as a short paid course based at KMT Head Office.

 In responding to QCF development, learners have been able to increase the number of options they have chosen as part of their courses and to transfer units completed in accrediting their achievements in order to pursue additional qualifications.

 Difference ways of accessing the curriculum including on-line provision are being piloted.

Increasing Customer Focus

Our main client outcomes: 1. Learners: that they are recruited, placed onto the right course for them and achieve their course (Achievement Target= over 80% +) and have positive destinations including qualification progression or employment,(See IAG Aims). 2. Kieran Mullin Ltd – to develop staff organically in our methods to maintain standards of service 3. Clients of Beauty (Orchid) and KM Academy salon clients that they have a good experience and return (takings, appointment sheets and client feedback).

Over the next three years KM Training aims to increase customer focus in a variety of integrated ways. These include:  Continued client, learner and other user surveys as part of self-assessment  Work experience through local schools and university involvement  Connexions in relation to R&S and learner support  Engaging the employer through joint working collaborative projects and initiatives for learner benefit  Development of the e-learning profile including KM website, KM client database and KMT e-IV, e-CPD, tracking and portfolio and surveys to capture the voice of our stakeholders.

Surveys As part of the self-assessment process, the views of customers (salon clients), learners, staff and the employer Kieran Mullin Ltd. are collected and analysed. These views are collected in a number of ways which include survey and interview. We aim to conduct a minimum of one client survey in each location, two bi-annual learner surveys (we share and use the results of the Consortia surveys) and interview the employer formally on an annual basis. Results are reported in the annual SA Reports. Learners are encouraged to self-assess their own client feedback on the client survey section on their consultation sheets.

 Connexions

Personal contacts have already been established with other stakeholders such as Connexions as appropriate.

Signposting • Applicants (60%+) are offered the opportunity to have a taster in the vocational areas geared to their situation,(after school activities and full time for unemployed at BL for 1-2 weeks). • Learners on tasters are contacted during tasters to review their progress. Feedback is generated. • At the end of the taster or course learners are provided with feedback and an assessment of relevant course with KMT or referral to other agencies or organisations eg Derby College, Burton College, The Academy, Princes Trust etc.

TM 11-2013 V10 10 KMT Business Plan 2013 • Early leavers are contacted to confirm exit reasons from the course.

 Recruitment and Selection

Recruits are analysed and double reviewed. Trends are noted. This has increasingly occurred online. If placements are full or learners are unsuccessful in applying for courses or additional training, they are recommended to pursue their applications with Connexions in Nottingham and Derby and at other local providers:  Derby College  Chesterfield College  Burton College  The Academy of Hair and Beauty  NHTA  New College Nottigham  National Careers Service  National Apprenticeship Service  Futures in Nottingham  Through Contractors: Prostart Training and Consortia  Radio Stations Facebook links

 Additional Learning Support and Additional Social Needs

KM Training work alongside their partner providers and Personal Advisers from Connexions to support learners. KMT can offer ATS for Dyslexia through Teresa Mullin.

Ensuring Provision of Excellent and Effective Learning

Our latest SA 2012 Development Plan sets out the next stage of our continuous improvement which is implemented as from January 2013 and reviewed and audited by Consortia Training throughout the year. KMTraining is classified as an independent registered Training Provider and has a UKPRN 10003701. In November 2004 and November 2007, KMT was inspected by the Adult Learning Inspectorate and Ofsted. Both inspections confirmed the self assessment grades that KMT had awarded itself.

Hairdressing Grade 2 Leadership and Management Grade 2 Equal Opportunities Grade 3

The strengths and weakness that were highlighted as part of these inspections continue to be reviewed and built upon in our annual SA Report and development plans in addition to our other continuous improvements. KM Training was graded 1 for a recent Ofsted visit as part of Consortia Training Ofsted Inspection who overall achieved a Grade 2. November 2013. Furthermore, external verification visits from VTCT and C&G (Functional Skills) continue to meet Awarding Body standards and to identify industry good practice. KM Training continue to obtain research funding through bid writing to continuously improve.

Disability Discrimination Monitor of Buildings

Working alongside the employer an audit of premises/buildings was been completed and also reviewed in 2007. Small areas for development were identified. Kieran Mullin, the employer worked alongside City Planners to ensure that the Westfield/ Eagle Centre salon was redeveloped with these concerns in mind. Redevelopment of Westfield was completed in December 2010. DDA is taken into account in new developments where appropriate and when learning is potentially going to take place at the premises.

The ASDA store salons are monitored by Walmart. Any concerns about DDA implementation is referred to Kieran Mullin Ltd Head Office or the ASDA Head Office in Leeds.

Financial Needs and Targets

Sales and Growth KMT receives income from its partners through sub-contracting agreements. All partners have contracts with the local councils and SFA. Despite the economic downturn apprenticeship recruitment saw an upturn from the main employer, KM. KMT maintains a healthy turnover by continually diversifying its’ courses and provision to learners and the employer as well as additional project and research work. In August 2013, we were informed that in order to continue sub-contracting that we would have to achieve the Matrix IAG award in order to continuing sub-contracting.

Oswald Lings Chartered Accountants in Derby audit KMT’s accounts.

Our main costs consist of staffing, on-line resources, learner course costs and accommodation. See KMT cash flow analysis for more details.

Learner Costs (2013)

Awarding body costs continue to increase and in 2013. KM Training became a VTCT Awarding Body Centre in order to reduce costs. C&G have introduced a minimum spend which we cannot sustain and we have appealed against. In October 2013 we have been told our appeal has failed. Once the current registered learners complete we will use VTCT although this is a reduced service in terms of access as VTCT offer only partial online testing so this will be reviewed in reflection of cost effective use of assessor/ trainer time.

Costs are detailed in the KMT accounts.

Management Information Systems

KMT is still using and developing its own MIS system with the aim of integrating all its current data generation online systems. We are continuing to develop the reporting capacity of this system.

Most communication is now conducted by telephone, email and online to our partners. This ensures timely submission of data. Internal auditing is still being maintained by both a manual system and IT based system along with the main providers’ systems. We have invested in additional IT equipment and support staff from the University of Derby. This will ensured that we have improved our effectiveness in our capacity to produce timely, meaningful and cost- effective data to support decision-making in our organisation.

TM 11-2013 V10 12 KMT Business Plan 2013

In addition we have transferred other systems on-line. These include:  Internal Verification  On-line surveys for learners, employer, staff. (Recently replaced by Consortia surveys to fit in with their SAR and funding requirements).  KM Client Data base  Learner Assessment Tracking/ e-portfolio  KMT Web Site  Kieran Mullin Web site  KM Interactaive touch screen facilities  KMT Course sites (piloted)  Staff e-CPD  E-induction (although this is for KM clients/ learners).  Education-Net.org

The KMT ILT Strategy and policy provide more information about aims and objectives for embedding ILT in KMT.

World Skills 2013, NEC, November 14-16

In 2013 we are working alongside Trevor Eeles from LAGAT and JISC to promote and disseminate our work-based learning project. i.e. Education-net.org at the World Skills event. This website offers user as the opportunitiy to access free resources which are curriculum based towards their career development.

TM 11-2013 V10 13 KMT Business Plan 2013

Staff Development- Professional Qualifications / CPD

All KM Training staff skills are monitored and quality assured through the comprehensive company CPD programme. Much of the vocational aspect of this programme is also extended through to the staff of KM in workshops on updating techniques, attending exhibitions and introduction of new products in the workplace. These are recorded on the KMT e-CPD.

Vocational skill updates of assessors and internal verifiers are confirmed through External Verification Visits and must conform to the HABIA strategy.

In addition, as part of the annual appraisal scheme other skill/ training needs of individuals are identified. These relate to the strategic business plan and guidance of the Department for Education and Skills and are brought together in the annual self-assessment development plan. Targets are negotiated with individual staff/ associate members.

Teresa Mullin and other staff members continue to collaborate and share good practice with other providers at various national and local events. KMT are currently leading a Jisc project called EdNet which will be exhibited at the World Skills 2013 at the NEC in November 2013. The KMT Staff development plan provides further information about investment in personal development.

Health and safety

In August 2013 the health and safety policies of the employers’ eleven salons, including Kieran Mullin Ltd. were updated in line with the updating of the KM Training policy. These include, for example, updates in product use, accident reporting procedures risk assessments and procedures for supervision of apprentices under 18. Safeguarding and protecting of learners at placements and during use of e-learning has been further developed. This will be reviewed again in 2014 and the Action Plan audit in February 2014.

Graham Dickens was funded to complete an IOSHH course and has completed a comprehensive audit of the work placements of learners. Health and safety monitoring systems are in place and are reviewed as part of our Self- assessment process and have been reviewed as part of the KMT Employment recruitment initiative. The Health and Safety Policy is available in each salon and at KMT. Audit reports are also available through KMT.
