Brief Description: All courses are designed with the appropriate level of activity, based on class design to give each student a varied program of team and individual sport activities, each with an emphasis in physical fitness. The California State physical fitness test will be given to all students in the spring. Weight training courses are upper division only (10 th – 12th grade). Students in these classes will be focusing on building muscle strength, understanding the effects of diet on the body, planning a long term work out program, personal goal setting and many more aspects of weight training. Suit: Each student is required to dress in school issued athletic clothes or appropriate clothing required for their class. If a student does not have their required P.E cloths they may get loaners for the day. The student is required to leave an I.D Card upon checkout and at the end of the period they must turn the loaners in. Each day loaner clothes are washed for health purposes. Plain navy or grey sweat tops or bottoms may be worn when weather is cold. Laced up athletic shoes are required for daily participation. Slip on or open toed shoes are not permitted when participating in an activity. There are no exceptions to the dress code in physical education. Each student will get three free loaners per semester. Loaners exceeding those three will be count for half of a letter grade. Attendance: Consistent attendance is essential to a student’s educational success. If a student cannot participate on a particular day due to illness or injury, he or she must bring a note from a parent or guardian. This does not excuse the student from participation for the day; the student will have to complete make-up work for the missed time. Please see your teacher for all make-up work. If non-participation is greater than two days the student must bring a note from a physician indicating the reason and duration of the excused non-suit. If due to a doctor’s note a student will be excluded from PE for less than 15 days then the student will be given written contract assignments by the individual teacher. If due to a doctor’s note the student is to be excluded from all activity for the more than 15 days, then the student will not receive credit for PE for the semester. Students are expected to attend school daily, and be on time for class. If a student is absent from class without a valid excuse or leaves class without the teacher’s permission, he/she is considered truant.

In accordance with State Education Code requirements, a student must be in class a minimum of 60 hours to receive five units of credit for that class. A student may receive a failing grade for unexcused absences exceeding ten (10) days per semester (SMUSD Board Policy 5113). Any student missing more than 30 days of any one class in a semester, will not receive credit for that class. Students may not concurrently take a course that they are enrolled in at the high school. Additionally, a course may only be remediated once the term has been completed. Seniors only may remediate a second semester course during the summer, which may impact participation in the graduation ceremony and / or receipt of diploma.
