Standards:

1.4 Demonstrate competence in the general skills and strategies of the reading process. 3.1.4c. Make, confirm, and revise simple predictions about a text. 3.2.2d. Objectives: Students will be able to

1. Create predictions as they try to figure out the outcome of different situations. 2. Use text clues (illustrations, previous statements, others) in order to make accurate predictions. 3. Formulate a list of the new things they learned about Patricia Polacco.

Spiritual Connection:

I will connect this to how God is faithful. I will point out to them how in the bible we can find many text clues that help us understand what is going to happen in the future. I will also talk to my students about how we can trust God 100%, and how we can always be certain about his predictions in our lives.

Pre-Assessment:

I will pre-asses the students by asking them how much previous knowledge they have text clues and how they help us make predictions. I will write their ideas and opinion they share in the beginning and through the discussion in an anchor chart. Assessment:

I will assess my students as we have a discussion and built an anchor chart about text clues. I will also be able to assess my students as they create accurate predictions while using text clues. Lastly I will assess them as they make a list of the new things they learned about Patricia Polacco.

Materials:

1. “My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother.” 2. Chart paper.

Vocabulary: text clues, predictions.

Lesson Plan

Engagement: (connect) For this part of the lesson I will bring my students back to the previous day and our read aloud of Patricia Polacco book called “My Old man.” I would talk to my students about how based on how we read about Patricia Polacco we might be making predictions about what is her next book going to be about. I will also try to connect them to real life’s experiences like how we predict many times what our birthday surprise party or Christmas presents are going to be like

Direct Instruction: (Knowledge/concepts) For this part of the plan I will have a little discussion about what things in life helps us make the right prediction and I will connect this to how good readers when they read books they use text clues to create successful predictions. (Ideas of text clues will be written down in an anchor chart.)

Skills: (Practice) For the practice part of the lesson I will read aloud to my students “My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother.” As I read I will pause and have my students practice making predictions as they use the different text clues to help them be successful.

Celebrate: (Refine)

After reading with the students and making predictions we will discuss how text clues helps us. We will also make a list together about all the new things we learned as we read a different book from Patricia Polacco. Lastly I will ask the students to share with me the differences they see between both books. After making the list and refining our thoughts we will publish the anchor charts in our classroom.
