It Is Said, You Don T Have to Lie Awake Nights to Succeed Just Stay Awake Days. (GLB)

DESRGC Bulletin/Newsletter May 2017

EDITOR’S MESSAGE:

It is said, “You don’t have to lie awake nights to succeed – just stay awake days.” (GLB)

Greetings to you all. As we go to print the main stir in the Kern River Valley is still the significant amount of water coming down the Kern River into Lake Isabella with no end in sight. Everyone in the water management has declared that the drought is over and even the governor has finally admitted it. Now he’ll go back to trying how to raise our taxes and try to figure out how to fund the “train to nowhere”. As you all know, the annual Lake Isabella Trout Derby was held on April 8th, 9th and 10th. As of yet I have not received any updates on any winners or how many fish were caught. I have heard sketchy reports that the water temperature is still cold with some scattered Catfish being caught and a few more Trout are showing up around the lake. I’m sure if the warm weather continues to improve, so will the fishing. The Crappie bite has not started but I am sure with all the old habitats now back throughout the lake, this will be a record year! If you are going to do some Crappie fishing and you are fortunate enough to get into a school, you should only keep what you will be able to consume. Don’t be one of those inconsiderate individuals that catch more than enough (even if it is still under the legal bag limit) just because the fish are biting and then get too lazy to clean the fish and wind up throwing the rest away. It is not only bad sportsmanship but totally irresponsible! Remember you can always fish all day long but practice catch and release to ensure everyone will enjoy fishing throughout the year. If any of you attended the Trout Derby and you have some fish stories or pictures, please forward them to me for posting in the next bulletin. Now that the summer season is beginning to get into full swing I wanted to convey to the general membership that we all need to become more involved with the Club and related activity. We do need more members but more than anything, we need more people to spend time at the Lodge. That’s how more revenue is generated and we need to have more people involved in attending any Club functions. We’ve had the yearly “Orphan’s Thanksgiving” and we only have a handful show up. Since we are not a “time share” facility, we should all be taking advantage of the opportunity to stay at the Lodge and enjoy the activities there or in any of the surrounding communities. This is YOUR Lodge and not some investors soaking you for money. So lend a hand and get more involved so we can keep operating for many years to come! Sometimes it’s almost comical to see small herds of deer wandering around the Lodge area while our members are out trudging up and down the local mountains (not so comical) searching for elusive bucks and not even getting a glimpse of one. Well, our own Greg Smith finally bagged a nice 4X4 and even brought in the mounted head. I have included a picture of the trophy buck in the bulletin. Enjoy! I am reminding everyone again to mail in your 2017 membership renewals, they should be sent in immediately to assist with operational costs. I would also like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a Blessed Easter celebration and I hope to see you all up at the Lodge soon.

A reminder to all members that if you expect to stay at the Lodge, you must make reservations through Jack Hays. Mail your deposits to DESR&GC at PO Box 147, Wofford Heights, CA. 93285. Your deposit will be returned by the Club Treasurer & not by Jack Hays. Until next time, may you all be abundantly Blessed.

Building Fund

Dear Members, As you all well know, our Lodge is under constant need of repair and upgrading. Several years ago, I started the Building Fund Project which was very successful thanks to you all. It was established since a lot of members felt left out of all the scheduled work parties to make all the necessary repairs and upkeep. For one reason or another, members couldn’t attend yet they still wanted to somehow be involved in the upkeep of the Lodge. We started the special fund again to provide for emergency repairs and upgrades. This fund will goes directly for materials used in the upkeep and for special needs in case of emergencies. This is how it works: Below you will find the attached donation certificate. Fill it out and forward it with your donation check or money order made out to “Douglas El Segundo Rod & Gun Club”. On the side memo line, write in “Building Fund”. It’s that simple. I would like to thank all of you in advance for your contribution and acknowledging the need for beautifying the Lodge which is second only to our valued members. Sincerely Yours, TBear Ochoa
