President ~ Terry Chenowth here did the year go? We are down to the last tournament of the year. Josh WRhodes has a large but not insurmountable lead over Greg Gardner in the Angler of the year chase. I remember a couple years back all Bud Brant needed at the tournament was to catch one thirteen inch Bass to lock it up. No problem we thought Bud’s been on fish all year, but as I recall at noon he still hadn’t caught one. I am sure Josh and Greg will give it all they can for the title. Good luck to both of you. Most of the top twelve is set but the last few spot have a pack of eight or nine anglers still with a shot. This should be fun to watch. As we all know our home for the last five years, Anglers Marine in Santee is closing its tackle store on October 31st. The boat and engine shop will remain in the area. They are opening at a new location in Lakeside to serve their customers needing work beginning November 1st. Our November meeting has been moved up to Tuesday October 25th. We will still be at Anglers Marine for one last time. The meeting will start at 7:00pm sharp just as always. The one difference is we will not have dinner at this meeting. So eat before you get there. The whole team at Anglers has treated us well for a lot of years and I am sure thy will continue to be strong supporters of the Bassmasters for years to come. We do have a new meeting location set up for the December meeting. It is on Lake Murray Blvd about a mile east on Lake Murray. We will have address and maps at the meeting. Applications for the Bassmasters Scholarship and nomination forms for Bassmaster of the Year will be available at the meeting. You need to get these filled out and into me ASAP. The Banquet is looking like it will be something special. Bud and Donalea Brant have been working on this all year. They let the board in on “some” but not all of the things they have planned. I am sure as always the board and a few volunteers will be working right up to the last minute to get everything done. This will be our 40th Anniversary Banquet and it will way out shine the other thirty nine.

See You on the River! REMEMBER: THE NOVEMBER MEETING IS OCTOBER 25th – NEXT TUESDAY! SAN DIEGO BASSMASTERS Page 2 NOVEMBER 2011 VICE PRESIDENT ~ BUD BRANT he 2011 season is almost over and we only have a few events left. Our next event is the Triver tournament with the TOC shortly after that, and then we will have the grand finale, the 2011 awards banquet honoring our 40th anniversary. Be sure to mark your calendar to join us on Sunday December 11th for a fun night of cruising on Mission Bay and celebrating 40 years with family and friends. There will be no sign up sheet this year because we are sending out invitations. Please be sure to respond to the RSVP as soon as possible and keep in mind that the club pays for each member and one guest. If you want to bring additional guests, the cost is $65.00 per person. I will have additional invitations at the general meeting if you did not receive your invitation by mail. On Friday October 14th we had the fun money tournament. The weather was great and the fishing was good which made for a pleasurable night of fishing. Sonny Hale and his partner, Chuck ended with the heavy stringer of tournament of 11.61 lbs. They also had big fish of tournament which was 6.85 lbs. Sonny and Chuck’s great night of fishing netted them $425.00! The teams of Ken Louis and Adam East and Greg and Zoe’ Gardner were the winners of the $100.00 drawing. I would like to thank everyone who participated in this tournament. We profited a little over $600.00 which made this event the most profitable event of the year. Thanks again for your support. See ya’ on the water,

TOURNAMENT CHAIRMAN ~ Greg Gardner Congratulations to Terry Chenowth for winning at El Cap. He is now in the San Diego Bassmasters “Tournament of Champions.” There is only one slot left – to be determined at our last tournament at the River in November. The question being how bad do you want that last opportunity? And look at the Top 12 after El Cap. I see a lot of close numbers; I think we will see some changes. It has been an exciting year and that last tournament at the River is always an exciting conclusion. I hope you are there to experience it, and maybe move up some in points. El Cap was fun and also a little tough for some. We had only 13 limits out of 34 fishermen. The weather was very nice, and the “other” boat traffic was light. Our top 3 had good days. Terry Chenowth took 1st place with 5 fish that weighed 11.79 lbs. Terry also had big fish of 3.35. 2nd place went to Josh Rhodes for 5 fish that weighed 10.85 lbs. That put Josh into a solid, but not unbeatable, position for angler of the year. And in 3rd was Jeff Manning. Jeff weighed 5 fish for 10.18 lbs. Good job Guys! Our next tournament will be at the Lower Colorado River on November 5th & 6th. This is a Saturday and Sunday event. I don’t know if there are any other tournaments down there that weekend, but we will plan to have our weigh ins at the cabana each day at 3:00. We will have a meeting Friday afternoon; we will talk more about that at our club meeting. You can weigh in 5 fish each day – 13”. After the tournament we will announce winners and the Top 12 for the year so don’t leave early. Then just 2 weekends later on November 19th will be our “Tournament of Champions” on El Cap. So far we have: Jim Davis, Inder Lopez, Jason Wilson, Larry Ward, Josh Rhodes, Ed Byrd, Ron Overman, and Terry Chenowth fishing it. With one more available slot. We do have a variance for that day, so you can weigh in 12” fish. The weigh in will be 3:00. We will draw for start positions at the meeting, after the Lower River tournament. Good luck to all…and see you there… SAN DIEGO BASSMASTERS Page 3 NOVEMBER 2011 FISH TALES ~ DORIS COOK NEWS FROM NBW!

National Bass West’s 10th Annual Lake Havasu Classic was held October 14/15th. San Diego anglers Kevin Norling and Kirk Pasalick blew the lower end in their boat motor and would have missed the tournament. Good guy, Ron Overman let the team use his boat and they finished third with nine fish weighing 32.20 winning $3,025.00. Dave Seaberg had planned to fun fish in Ron’s boat as Regina fished the tournament alone, since Dave didn’t fish enough tournaments to qualify for the Classic. Regina came in 71st out of 83 teams and won a mystery weight prize of $290.00. Ron said he and Jim Sleight were fishing up river and here came Regina passing them going about 60 miles per hour. She was afraid of the sandbar, but braved it and sailed over it. Regina, you did good and congratulations for doing it alone. Ron and Jim caught 20 fish per day and weighed in 10 at 19.81 pounds finishing 45 th. They couldn’t get the big ones! Dave went shooting instead of fishing!

ANGLERS MARINE TACKLE SHOP NO MORE!

Most of you are aware that Anglers Marine on Wheatland Avenue in Santee will close their doors on October 31 st after serving the fishing community here since 2006. November 1st they will open their Full Service Marine Repair and boat accessories sales in the building occupied by FE Trailer Sales at 11919 Woodside Avenue in Lakeside. Art Bailey will continue as manager to assist everyone with their boat and motor repairs and upkeep. Good luck with your new venture! We’ll miss the tackle store! Thanks for allowing San Diego Bassmasters to hold our meetings in your store.

FUN NIGHT TOURNAMENT!

Jim and I survived fishing the fun night tournament until 2:00 A.M. Saturday. Fishing wasn’t that great for us, but I managed to loose and reel overboard. I had my line out and took my hand off the rod to put my hood up and my rod and reel went flying out of the boat. I hope there was a big fish on the end of the line. Should you hook a spinner reel and rod near the old road from the launch ramp, it’s mine! Thanks to Bud Brant for heading up this very successful event.

SONNY GETS A FISH CATCHING BOAT!

Sonny Hale made plans to purchase a used Champion boat from a private party in Dana Point. When he was about to leave to go get it, he got a call from the owner saying he had decided to keep the boat. Sonny was very disappointed, but checked Craig’s List and found another one for sale. He called the guy and met him at his house when he got home from work and got himself a very nice boat. It must be a fish catching boat as Sonny and his partner Charles Braaten won the fun night tournament and had a six pound big fish. Way to go guys!

THE CHAPMANS TAKE ANOTHER TRIP!

Lee and Irene Chapman left Tuesday, October 18th to visit their attorney son, Daniel in Chicago. After this visit, they will ride the train to St. Louis, Missouri to spend time with four of Lee’s childhood friends and one of Irene’s relatives. Have a wonderful trip!

THE BYRD’S TOO! SAN DIEGO BASSMASTERS Page 4 NOVEMBER 2011 Cheryl and Ed Byrd just got back from a trip, this one to Cabo. The weather was hot as was the dorado (mahi mahi) fishing! The fishing was so good, Ed finally was able to catch a fish! Here’s a picture of one of Ed’s fish: They came back with 40 pounds of fish!

TREASURER ~ FRANK NEUGEBAUER We have made it through 9 of our 10 points tournaments for the year with only the river remaining. Mr. Josh Rhodes has built himself a commanding lead going into the last one for the year. It looks like only Greg “The Guru”Gardner has a chance at catching Josh and he will have to beat Josh by 25 places at the river to make that happen. However, with Greg in the hunt nothing is for sure until the fish hit the scales. There looks to a great deal of competition for the top Three, Six and Twelve spots. There is a certain amount of prestige as well as benefits for making each one of those levels. The top three guys get a great belt buckle at the end of the year. Top six get to represent the club in the San Diego Bass Council Top Six Tournament as well as a really cool the Top Six shirt you get as a working trophy. The top twelve guys get a monetary reward toward tackle as part of the year end banquet as the budget allows and this year the budget looks good. Good Luck to everyone in competition for those spots. Congratulations to Terry Chenowth for his first place finish at the El Capitan tournament which he topped off by winning the big fish money as well. Nice job Terry. Josh Rhodes came in second and Jeff Manning took the third spot. The club is doing well financially. We had the fun tournament at El Capitan on Friday night which generated $649.00 for the club. This puts the check register at $10,747.40 and the savings account is at $3,772.06 for a total of $14,519.46. I know Bud and Donalea have been working hard on the banquet because I have some checks to write this week. As you know we are coming down to the end of the year. There are only two meetings left in the year and before the banquet. Please try to pay the remainder of you year-end dues at the November meeting. This helps in paying the banquet expenses, most of which are due before the banquet. Thank you to all of the members that have paid through the end of the year so far. DON’T FORGET: THE NOVEMBER MEETING HAS BEEN MOVED TO 10/25/11. See you on the water! SAN DIEGO BASSMASTERS Page 6 NOVEMBER 2011 SAN DIEGO BASSMASTERS Page 7 NOVEMBER 2011

The Bassmasters are going to run the TOC tournament next year the date will be announced later. Bud Brant said the only event we have left on the schedule is the fun night tournament. We will be at El Cap, we have no variance so we will weigh in 15” fish. A limit is 3 fish only. It should be a 6 hour tournament but depends on what time we take off. We have 22 boats signed up now if anyone wants to sign up at the lake he will accept them. Greg Gardner said Don Weber needs a partner for the river. Greg has 22 boats for the day El Cap tournament. Launch and go 5 fish limit we do have a variance so we will weigh in 12” fish. TURKEY TALK If A lady was picking through the frozen turkeys at the grocery store, but couldn't find one big enough for her family. She asked the stock boy, "Do these turkeys get any bigger?"

The stock boy answered, "No ma'am, they're dead." SAN DIEGO BASSMASTERS Page 8 NOVEMBER 2011
