Big Ideas: Setting – time and place of a story Imagery – descriptive language that appeals to the reader’s senses Mood – the feeling the author creates through her use of imagery, detail, and diction Characterization – the methods an author uses to create a character (words, actions, physical features, words of other characters) Elements of Plot – exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution Annotation –for The Outsiders. Be sure you look over them for imagery, detail, diction, mood, and levels of reading questions Levels of Questioning – You have an activity sheet that covers this. 3 levels – on the line (literal); between the lines (inferential); beyond the lines (thematic) Detail – important pieces of information that don’t fall into the category of imagery but still help create mood Diction – author’s word choice; helps create characters and mood Point of view – first person, second person, third person Theme – Big ideas in a story – Answers to your level three questions are the major themes of the story
