IPEd Notes – June to August 2015 Accreditation exam date announced – 25 June 2016 The Accreditation Board has announced that the next accreditation exam, which will be an onscreen exam, will be held on Saturday 25 June 2016. This is later than the date of 30 April which we had previously been working towards, but on reviewing the schedule of things that needed to be done to minimise the risks associated with the new method of delivery, we felt it safest to allow a little extra time.
Registrations will open at the beginning of March, and exam preparation workshops will be held in March or April. The exam preparation workshops will include sessions where participants can brush up on their Word skills and practice using the onscreen format.
2011 accreditations due for renewal in 2016 A reminder to AEs who were accredited in 2011 that you will need to renew your accreditation next year. So make sure that you are keeping track of the things you will need to document when the time comes to submit your application for renewal. Check out the requirements on the IPEd website at http://iped-editors.org/Accreditation/Renewal_of_accreditation.aspx . IPEd Transition The working party tasked with the transition of IPEd towards a national direct membership organisation has decided, following consultation with members and an analysis of the work involved, to take a more gradual, staged approach to the transition, should direct membership be chosen in the October and November vote. The initial stage will include essential elements that later stages will depend on. It will include a centralised membership system that will enable: a national membership structure event management and registration a national freelance register the membership list and functions enabling transmission of national and branch newsletters efficient access to members-only information the basis for setting up and handling finances. The revised plan includes the appointment of contract staff for the first stage who will manage the membership and event system, accounting and banking, and executive officer duties. This will include managing first-stage functions as well as planning for further stages. The new plan will result in an initial more modest fee increase for members than first proposed, with the needs and benefits of individual editors being a priority as they become direct members of IPEd. This will give an immediate, national voice to Australian editors in a profession where national organisations are the norm internationally. The work undertaken by the working party to date includes planning for future services of IPEd such as a national newsletter, national website, readily accessible professional development training and other benefits to individual members of a national organisation. Their implementation will be the business of the new IPEd and subject to approval by the individual members as required by the new constitution. Professional development information on the IPEd website IPEd has expanded the professional development section of the IPEd website to include a listing of workshops being held by societies of editors across Australia. It includes details of the workshops, as well as links to the societies of editors’ websites for further information. Also included in this section of the website is a list of past IPEd conferences with links to conference papers where available. Further information is available on the Professional development page of the IPEd website.
Updating of ‘Guideline for editing research theses’ The ‘Guidelines for editing research theses’ have recently been updated regarding plagiarism, with the documents for editors, students and supervisors amended. The guidelines were originally developed in conjunction with the Deans and Directors of Graduate Studies (DDoGS), which is now the Australian Council of Graduate Research Inc. (ACGR). The ACGR included an item in its newsletter to universities and on its website that explained the guidelines and encouraged universities to ensure that their websites contain the most recent updates to the guidelines. The news item included links to the ‘Guidelines for editing research theses’ and ‘Australian standards for editing practice’ on the IPEd website.
