Language Arts Lesson ideas for a Public School Kindergarten and First Grade

Weaving the Circle Phonetic Kinesthetics: Start with a beginning verse or activity. Introduce consonant sounds by rhythmically clapping and or stepping them, as indicated by the number sequence, in alphabetical order (123, 123, 12345, 12345, 12345) (bcd, fgh, jlkmn, pqrst, vwxyz). Do a movement activity to help the circle breathe in different directions. Sing vowel gestures and mood poem Remediation activity (Beanbag or rods) Gesturing letter formation strokes while reciting sounds Circle breathing activity Simon says reading game Display a list of action words, then after saying "Simon says", point to one of the words. Students must do what the word indicates. Hopscotch simple phonetic word game Divide class into two or more teams. Each team has a token they use to place on the number squares of the hopscotch diagram. The token has a short sound letter combination such as (ut) written on it. Members of each team take turns trying to advance their token up the diagram by making a word with the sound on their token.
