FILM TWO - #BreakTheSilence
[Start of recorded material at 00:00:00]
[Background noise and speech 00:00:00 – 00:00:10]
Female voice: Urgh, babe, just unfollow him. You don’t need to be [seeing] that shit.
Female voice: Yeah. But I know, I guess … I just want to see what he’s been up to, and if he sees I’ve unfollowed him, then he might –
Female voice: Who cares. Just delete him.
Female voice: Yeah. No, you’re right. I should go [unintelligible 00:00:29].
Female voice: I’m coming with you, right.
Female voice: No, I think I’m just going to walk.
Female voice: OK. Love you, Lay.
[Music begins 00:00:42]
Female voice: Hi, it’s Layla.
[Music and background noise 00:01:00 – 00:01:34]
Female voice: Hi, Layla, do you want to come through? So I’m Rebecca, and I realise what a big step it can be to walk into a rape crisis centre. What we do here I, we support survivors of rape and sexual abuse. We listen and we believe. I’m an independent sexual violence advocate, an ISVA, and my role is supporting survivors through the criminal justice system. Because you were raped over a week ago, we won’t talk about the [Havens] … sexual assault referral centres, where they do forensic and medical examinations. But we can talk about testing for STIs and pregnancy. So what we can do is explore your options and I’ll support you through your next steps. Now, this process is entirely led by you, and that means there’s no pressure whatsoever. Everything you say to me is confidential. We are a completely independent organisation, and that means that we won’t say anything to the police unless you want us to. Have you had much support around you?
Female voice: My friend Amy. She’s my best friend, she knows.

Hey.
Female voice: How was it? Where are you at?
Female voice: Yeah, it was good. I mean, it’s crazy, it’s right there. Like I walk past that all the time.
Female voice: Well, what happened?
Female voice: So I went in the room with the lady. She was nice. I don’t really know what she said at first, I kind of zoned out, but she was saying that they’re independent, so if I don’t want to go to the police, that’s fine, and they won’t tell anyone. And she said it was fine that it’s taken me so long to come forward.
Female voice: If you do want to go to the police, then we can support you with that; we’d arrange for a SOIT office to come to the centre. A SOIT is a specialist police officer who works in the sexual offences team.
Female voice: Oh, shit.
Female voice: Yeah. It can be overwhelming. They’d come to the centre and take a brief statement from you, and then arrange for you to go into a police station.
Female voice: Police station?
Female voice: It would be to make a full video statement. Then a detective would question him, the suspect, and decide whether he can be arrested.
Female voice: What are you going to do?
Female voice: I unfollowed him. I’m going to do it. I mean, he can’t just keep on going on thinking he can get away with it. And if he did it again to someone else, then …
Female voice: [Lay], what’s best for you? That’s the question.
