Beret – how to correctly wear it and ensure that it fits comfortably. SHOES/BOOTS – how to clean them, how to lace them and how to tie the laces. OTHER UNIFORM ITEMS – to be kept clean and pressed and in good repair.
As you progress through the MYG you will learn more and more about the different types of Uniform worn throughout the Group and the Public Services. Within the MYG we tell the time using a 24 hour time system, instead of the conventional AM and PM method. Let’s start with a conventional system.
There are 24 hours in a day divided into two 12 hour periods – Midnight to 12 noon (AM), 12 noon to midnight (PM).
The clock face is divided into hours – 1 to 12. Each hour is divided into minutes – there are 60 minutes in 1 hour. Each minute is divided into seconds – there are 60 seconds in one minute.
Count the number of marks between the 12 and the 1. How many are there?
The answer is:
Now count the number of marks between 12 and 3. How many are there?
By counting around the clock face in this way we can quickly convert the hours into minutes.
This clock face has two hands. The big hand (the outer one) is measuring the minutes, the little hand (the inner one) is measuring the hours. The hands move from right to left in a circle – this is known as a ‘Clockwise’ motion. If you were to wind the clock backwards, from left round to the right, this is known as an ‘Anti-clockwise’ motion.
On a many watches and clocks there is a third hand that moves faster than the others and sweeps round the clock face to measure ‘Seconds’.
Some watch and clock faces do not have numbers on them and may look like this:
Here are some examples of times – can you work out what they are? Write your answer in the box underneath each clock – don’t forget to show whether AM or PM. NIGHT EVENING AFTERNOON MORNING
The 24 HOUR CLOCK
Now we are going to move onto the 24 hour clock. You have already learnt about the conventional clock times now we will change to this system.
Here’s how we change the first 12 hours (AM) – commencing at midnight.. We now change the numbers to a four digit number by adding noughts (0) so that for example, 1.00am looks like this - 0100:
We have only changed how the hours are shown, we still count the minutes the same way as we did before.
We count the 24 hours starting at midnight - we go around the clock face from 0100 to 1200 – we then continue around again. The 0100 then becomes 1300 and so we go right around again back to midnight. This makes our 24 hours. Once you have worked out the hours you add in the minutes. For example – 1300 hours plus 5 minutes becomes1305, 1300 hours plus 10 minutes becomes 1310 and so on.
Let’s see if you can work these out.
NIGHT EVENING AFTERNOON MORNING
Now let’s try it a different way. The time will be given, using the clock dials draw in the two hands.

Task 18 HEALTH AND HYGIENE
In order to help you be smart in appearance there are a number of things that you should learn and understand why we do these things.
HAIR – your hair should be neat and tidy and above the ears. Girls who have long hair should either put their hair up using either a hair band, hair clips or hair net. This will ensure that your beret will fit correctly and help you look smart.
WASHING OF HANDS – dirty hands carry lots of germs that could make you ill. It is important to wash your hands regularly, particularly after you have been handling dirty items, been to the toilet and before you handle food. Soap is provided in the toilet areas for you to use – so please use it when you wash your hands.
FINGERNAILS – long finger nails harbour dirt so it is important to ensure that your nails are cleaned of dirt and are kept reasonably short so that dirt cannot get under the nails.
FEET – these should be kept clean as they sweat inside boots and shoes.
SHOWERING / WASHING – when on training weekends you are likely to get dirty or sweaty so make sure that you wash or shower especially after sports or very active exercise.
SLEEP – you will become tired particularly after very active exercise. Make sure that you get plenty of sleep, so that you are refreshed for the following days activities whether at cadets or at school. Remember - Tired cadets do not concentrate or learn fully.
What you now need to do is complete the work packs and work sheets given to you by your instructor Instructors Section
