Minutes of Detachment Executive Committee Oak Orchard/Riverdale Post 28, May 13, 2017 Acting Commander Toby Cullen called the meeting to order according to the rituals of The Sons of The American Legion. Acting Chaplin, Ed Gossett, Jr., gave the opening prayer. Guest: None Minutes: A motion was made by Larry Hollinger and second by Terry Ziegler and passed to accept the minutes of DEC March 11, 2017 meeting. Finance Report: The current financial status was not presented to the committee as the Finance Officer did not receive them prior to meeting. The proposed budget for the detachment for the 2017-2018 year, after discussion, a motion was made by Larry Hollinger to accept the budget, seconded by Terry Johnson, and was passed. Committee Reports:  VA&R – No report It was noted that SQ 28 member Sky Brady plays at the VA home every 3rd Friday  VA&VS – No report  Membership – o Detachment membership at 92.05% being 6th in the Region and 33rd/34th nationally. No Detachment in our Region achieved 100%. o Squadrons to continue to submit renewal cards to reach the 105% by goal date of July 25. o SAL Squadron 27 Lancaster Avenue, in Willington has between 10 to 12 members charter members. The Detachment officers need to visit Post 27 when the officers get back from vacation o Squadrons that have not submitted their CSR’s need to ASAP.  Americanism – o Report from Squadron 30 – Thursday New Castle has 11-Teams ready for Baseball o Seaford has a Legionnaire interested in starting a Junior Shooting program, in which Squadron 28 has Air Riffles not utilized in years. Looking for youths interested in getting this program going and volunteers to help, noting that there is an opportunity to compete towards a scholarships.  Legislative – No report  Children and Youth o A Newsletter from John Waite National C&Y Chairman will be distributed soon. o Noted at the Spring NEC that it was amazing on how a few dollars from the various Squadrons and Detachments amounted to over $110k matched by Arizona for $220k donations to the CWF. o Boys State June 11th – 14th. Post 28 is doing 35 pizzas and Post 14 will provide subs for a snack.  Sick Call / Relief o Toby Cullen mentioned Charlie Hacker a Legionnaire and friend of the SAL from Post 28 has been ill with phenomena complicated by the flu and he will be taking him home this week. Old/Unfinished Business: Consolidated reports received by the following Post: 5, 6, 17, 19, 24, 28 and 30. All Squadrons need to submit a report as Delaware could be recognized for having 100% participation, so please submit all reports to Mike Cotten. ASAP During our National Commander’s visit Post 5 was recognized for their great hospitality, Post 17 for the great lunch, Post 7 for the great buffet, Post 2 for Lunch and Post 28 providing a great time during the National Commanders visit to Delaware. He enjoyed it so much; he is looking forward to a return vacation in the area. Additional visits during Commander Frain’s stay in Delaware included Home of the Brave where the Detachment presented a $500 donation, and a visit to the VA Home in Milford where the Detachment presented a donation of $450. Along with socialization with active duty service men and woman visiting Delaware with the Warrior Weekend Program, where they visited Fort Miles and stayed at Melisa’s Bed and breakfast in Rehoboth. New Business:  National Convention – inquiry was made as to if anyone other than The Commander, NEC, and Adjutant will be attending the National Convention August 22-24.  State Convention – Information was provided regarding the State Convention in Dover, DE Wednesday July 13th-14th . Each Squadron will be responsible for their rooms. A request from Department of $30 per attendee per night for the Fire and Ice lounge. A call for Convention will be issued 30 days prior to Convention.  Dues increase – Detachment dues will be $10 per member starting 2017-2018 year.  Certified Officer Reports – Please have Adjutants submits Spreadsheet to Mike Cotten Detachment Adjutant after Squadrons election.  It is suggested that Squadrons implement the use of Committee Chairs – Reduce the work load by utilizing Committee Chairs to submit reports.  Squadrons Budgets – To reduce potential issues, Squadrons should have a planned budget outline and signed by their Post Commander.  Eastern Regional – Mike Cotten is running for National Vice Commander for the Eastern Regional and looking for support and donations from the Detachment to help with expenses to get Delaware recognized.  Membership – National has requested that we make sure to get members and new members email and birth date. And requested that we sign up 3 Legionaries.  September 9 and 10 DEC training. Weekend and event– All Squadrons are welcome to this great event, more information to follow. Please let Mike Cotten aware of your Squadrons interest.  Meals on Wheels – Cheer Center in Georgetown is looking for volunteers to assist in delivering Meals-On-Wheels to some of the 980 veterans how get these meals in Sussex County, if you have available time, contact Cheers directly, regarding your availability.  Commander’s Project – In Scotts Underoffler absents, Ed Gossett, Jr, has tickets available for the Commanders Project Home of the Brave Guitar Raffle, custom guitar made by Tom Baker of SAL Post 28.  Home of the Brave is in need of items but no available storage and has requested donations of $50 Gift Card (Visa, Wal-Mart or the like) so they may purchase the items they need as they need them. Resolutions: None Squadron News and Events:  Squadron 2: No smoking upstairs on Saturdays, smoking is permitted downstairs. Also having a dinner coming up $10 per person.  Squadron 5: Memorial Day BBQ, and a raffle for a 6-Course meal for 7  Squadron 6: Annual yard sale May 20th 1/2 -chicken $7 will be placing flags on graves Sunday May 21 in Seaford.  Squadron 7: None  Squadron 8: Log Cabin Pending Sale  Squadron 14: Mother’s Day Breakfast $7, 2nd June Installation, 10th June Golf Tournament,  Squadron 17:Looking to send 3 to 4 Delegate’s to the State Convention, will participate in Lewes Memorial Day Parade.  Squadron 18: None  Squadron 19: None  Squadron 24: None  Squadron 25: None  Squadron 27: Ready to get started  Squadron 28: Golf Tournament next Friday $95 per player, Frets4Vets Concert Tickets available to help support its PTSD Program, Ed Gossett, Jr. has tickets available.  Squadron 30: Sponsored Holes for Post 28 and Wilmington U Golf Tournament, placing Small Flags on graves and selecting their ROTC Scholarship recipient. For the Good of the SAL:  Terry Johnson – Del-Tech has a new Vets Program called VIP. Contact David Tidwell at 1-800-461-8262 Ext 2300 for additional information.  Kenneth Warner of Pennsylvania is a candidate for National Vice Commander and ask for our support.
