Pork chops, facial chops, bagpipes and kings during Chop Month at Mountain Sun Pubs

BOULDER, Colo. (January 22, 2010) — February is the 17th annual Stout Month at the Mountain Sun pubs, and the 12th annual Chop Month, where employees and owners are encouraged to cut their hair in unusual styles and shapes, culminating in two big competitions at the end of the month.

“Chop Month” was created 12 years ago by Timothy McMurray and Lou Santini. The 11th Annual Chop Month became a regional celebration with the opening of Vine Street Pub in Denver. Now, Chop Month is national, as Christian Anderson, a previous employee of Mountain Sun, has opened “The Monk’s Kettle” in San Francisco, and will hold Chop Month there as well.

On Saturday, February 27 at 10 pm, the Vine Street Pub will hold the Denver Chop Month competition, with an appearance by the King of Chops on his throne, bagpipe playing, and live haircuts and crazy hairstyles happening throughout the pub. Mountain Sun Pub and Brewery will hold the Boulder version the next night, Sunday, February 28. Prizes such as pork chops, cash, and beer are given to the Chop Kings and winners are determined by popular vote.

“Stout Month is an extra busy, extra fun month here, and Chop Month is the culmination of it all,” said Kevin Daly, owner. “It’s incredible how popular this event is – some people even build their own personal web sites around Chop Month!”
