Suddenly Under the Snow Something Stirs. the Snow Quakes and Cracks and Shifts and Falls

PULGAR STORY

In the coldest part of January, high in the mountains—just before dawn, there is nothing moving. No sound. No signs of life. The trees stand crooked, cold, and black against the frozen landscape. The snow sifts restlessly in the path of the wind’s icy tentacles.

Suddenly under the snow something stirs. The snow quakes and cracks and shifts and falls away. And out from his winter sleeping place comes the PULGAR!

The Pulgar sleeps year round. Only once—in the dead of winter does he come out: to eat.

He heads for the nearest town. Down the mountain in the cold. He comes into town ---ravenous.

He eats a dog and a cat. Gobbles down a milkman and munches giant chunks of shrubbery.

He eats the wheels off a truck and crunches up a blue Volkswagon.

When he is full, eaten everything in sight, his eyelids get heavy and he needs an after dinner nap. He slowly, sluggishly lumbers back out into the high mountains. He climbs high into the crags. Digs down in the snow and hollows out a new den. Then he falls asleep for another year.
