NCPD Council on Mental Illness Sponsors Web Seminar and Provides Resources in Observance of Mental Illness Awareness Week

Washington, D.C. – The National Catholic Partnership on Disability (NCPD) Council on Mental

Illness, joins with thousands of individuals and organizations in marking National Mental Illness

Awareness Week, October 5-11, 2008. Often overlooked as a disability, mental illness is in fact, included under the protections of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and affects an estimated one in four families.

In observance of the week, the Council is hosting a web seminar (“Webinar”) on

Monday, October 6, from 1:00 – 2:00 pm (EDT). The hour-long, on-line seminar will feature

Council members Connie Rakitan and Fr. Bob Malloy, OFM Cap addressing the issue of

Nurturing the Sacramental Life of People with Mental Illnesses. The webinar will also include a

PowerPoint presentation and a live question and answer segment between participants and presenters. Following the webinar a “resource binder” on ministry with people having mental illnesses will be available on our website for download and use. The target audience of priests; deacons; seminarians; chaplains; religious; and diocesan and parish pastoral, school and religious education personnel can register or obtain further information at www.ncpd.org.

In addition to conducting the Webinar, the NCPD Council on Mental Illness has prepared resources for liturgies and activities that parishes and dioceses can use during Mental Illness

Awareness Week (established in 1990 by Congressional Resolution), as well as for the National

Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding on Tuesday, October 7. Council

Co-Chair, Deacon Tom Lambert, explains that “parishes can play an important role in reaching out to individuals with mental illness and their families, and to raise awareness of the need for improved services, health care parity, and inclusion opportunities.”

Local observances may include liturgies, prayer services, educational presentations, and intercessions during Mass. It is also suggested that parish bulletins and diocesan newspapers publish information about mental illness. Information about the Webinar and resources and

Internet links are available from NCPD at www.ncpd.org.

NCPD was established in 1982 to advocate for welcome and justice for people with disabilities and their families within the Catholic Church and their communities. It launched the

NCPD Council on Mental Illness in May 2006 to carry out the following mission:

Following Jesus who embraced all, we assist the Catholic Community in reaching out to and accompanying our brothers and sisters with mental illness and their families, assuring their rightful place in the Church and society.
