Advisory Syllabus & Grading Criteria 2006-2007 Lara Hollingworth

Advisory is…  about developing relationships with students  a place to get to know students in order to become their advocate, support, and guide  a place where a student is known personally by an adult  a place to get academic support and guidance  designed to provide some time for independent study and reading  a place to deal with school-wide, and real world, issues and information  a connection from school to home  a place where information is successfully distributed  about creating a positive school climate  a place where respect is demonstrated by everyone  a place where students and adults form strong relationships with others  a place where our advisory is unique  a program that puts sophomores, juniors, and seniors together with a staff member who functions as each student’s advocate for all three years of high school.  A safe place to relax, have some fun and be yourself

How should I use Advisory as a student? As a student, you should see Advisory as a way to connect to the school and to a teacher that has nothing to do with academics. Advisory becomes a place in you will receive support for your goals, get help with your difficulties, help others, and enjoy being at school. If you are having trouble with a teacher or with another student, you should talk to me. I can help you find ways to solve the problem and I can help you hook up with adult help if things have really gotten out of hand.

How should I use Advisory as a parent? The advisor is the first line of defense when things go wrong or when a parent needs information. I will do my best to contact you if grades slip or if any incidents occur which involve your student. If you want to find out about a grade or have any other concerns about your student, the best route is to email or call me. email: [email protected] phone: school (425) 836-6600 ext 323

All school policies for Advisory are… that students will remain in their room for the full advisory time (unless we are doing some activity together somewhere else). Students will not generally be able to visit other advisories, classrooms, or the library. Please review the monthly advisory calendar for school wide advisory and EHS activities. Students are required to participate in all activities with a good attitude.

Grading Each advisory activity is worth one point. You cannot earn points on days that you are absent or days that you choose not to participate. I recognize that some days, you may be ill or have serious studying needs and be unable to participate in the assigned activity, so the grading scale reflects this reality. A = 100% - 80% C = 79% - 60% F = 59% - 0%

In general, the requirements for each grade are as follows… To earn an “A” in Advisory, you must  Attend advisory with no more than 3 unexcused absences per semester  Participate in all class activities (eagerly would be nice) on a daily basis including discussions, assemblies and guest speaker presentations); come prepared; communicate respectfully, and often, with a variety of classmates and the teacher- without prompting  Take a leadership role in advisory, by organizing appropriate events or activities.  Complete 20 hours of documented community service each year (students cannot earn an “A” for second semester if community service has not been completed)

To earn a “C” in Advisory, you must  Complete less than 20 hours of documented community service each year  Attend advisory with no more than six (6) absences(of any type) per semester  Participate in all but one or two class activities, including assemblies and guest speaker presentations.  Make an effort to communicate with everyone in advisory

Students will be evaluated on this rubric each quarter. Only the semester evaluation will appear on the transcript. Advisory carries .25 credits per semester.

I have read through and understand the role of advisory class.
