Greetings from Orono

Greetings from Orono!

As summer approaches, it’s important to plan ahead for New Student Orientation and SFR 101 – Introduction to Forest Resources.

New Student Orientation

You are invited to attend New Student Orientation on June 15-16 or June 24-25. Please register for orientation by calling 207-581-1561 or go to: http://umaine.edu/orientation/summer-orientation/online-registration/

The orientation agenda includes spending a night in the residence hall, sessions on campus life, a meeting with me to go over your schedule and degree requirements, receiving your MaineCard (student ID card), and receiving a vehicle parking permit if needed.

Math Placement Exam:

If you haven’t done so, please complete your Math Placement Exam as soon as possible. Your course schedule can’t be completed until you take the exam. Go online (courses.maine.edu) and enter your UMS User ID and password. Click on the Math Placement test link on the right side of the page to start the test. It may take up to 24 hours after you have activated your MaineStreet account for the Math Placement Test to be available to you. If you so not see the link, try again in 24 hours. For assistance, contact the IT Help Center.

SFR 101 – Introduction to Forest Resources

You are registered for SFR 101 – Introduction to Forest Resources. The class takes place on August 26 to August 31 at the Tanglewood Camp near Lincolnville, Maine. On Sunday, August 26, we will meet between 12-1 for lunch at Nutting Hall; friends and family are invited to join us. We’ll depart to the Camp around 1:30 pm.

The class will occur one week before the official start of the semester. Therefore, we need to make special arrangements for the early start. To make sure all of your needs are met, please be sure to return the enclosed form.

To pay for meals and lodging, a $315 fee will be added to your University Billing Account.

Course Content

Information about the class can be found on our web site: http://www.forest.umaine.edu/ Look under “Prospective Students” and click on the “Introduction to Forest Resources” link. Storage of Belongings

If you need to store your dormitory belongings during the week at camp, a secure room is available near Nutting Hall. You can bring your belongings to the rear of Nutting Hall between 11 am and noon on Sunday, August 26, so that we can store them in the room. As is usual for campus, we can not be liable for what happens to your belongings, but they will be stored in a very safe and secure room. After we return from Camp on August 31, we will provide the transportation and help to bring your belongings to your dormitory room.

Overnight Housing on August 25

If you need a room to sleep in on August 25, single dorm rooms are available on campus for about $31 (the cost will be added to your University billing). Indicate on the attached form if you need a room.

PLEASE RETURN THE RESPONSE FORM BY JULY 31.

What to Bring to the Tanglewood Camp

The Tanglewood Camp has cabins with bunk beds and a dining hall. You must bring your own sleeping bag, pillow, and towels. All food and beverage will be provided at the camp, so please do not bring your own food and beverages to the cabins. As with all public places in Maine, smoking is prohibited in the buildings. The cell phone signal at the camp is weak and is not always available; a public phone is available for phone-card/charge card calls. Important messages can be left with the administrative staff at the camp (207-789-5868) or at the School of Forest Resources (207-581-2841).

We will spend almost the entire day outside in the woods, so come prepared for outdoor whether. Sturdy, rain-proof boots are highly recommended as well as a rain-suit. Also, the weather in late August near the coast is highly unpredictable. Be prepared for hot dry weather (90F) as well as cold wet ocean weather (45F and fog). In other words, be sure to bring at least one warm sweater plus a light jacket. You will also need a flashlight with extra batteries to walk through the camp at night.

Parking

No personal cars can be driven to the Tanglewood Camp. If you need to leave a car on the Orono campus, be sure that you have a parking permit. Parking permits cost $50 for the year and can be obtained during New Student Orientation at the Student Service Center. If you can’t attend New Student Orientation but still need a permit, you can apply for a permit online at: http://umaine.edu/parking/permit-application/.

Other Items

Be sure to complete and return the enclosed response form. If you have any questions about attending the class, don’t hesitate to contact me at 207-581-2990 or [email protected]. Enjoy the summer!
