Catalog Description: Special topics in Ceramic hand building.

General Course Description: This class is a one semester hand building course. The students will continue to refine their hand building skills and knowledge of the properties of clay by completing 10 assignments. The esthetics of form and surface will be emphasized.

Learning Outcomes: At the conclusion of this course, the student should: 1. Be able to decide which construction technique is best utilized to best achieve their designs full potential 2. Be knowledgeable of the process of pottery making; preparing clay, making objects, bisque and glaze firing. 3. Appreciate and utilize good design elements to make beautiful and or functional pottery. 4. Appreciate the cultural and historical foundations of pottery and recognize where their own work fits in.

Assessment of Outcomes: The above learning outcomes will be measured by: 1. The students use of classroom instruction applied to the production of assignments. 2. In class discussions. 3. Critiques of individual works.

Page 1 of 2 Grades: For an A, you must have all 10 assignments completed, full out an assignment assessment sheet, and have no more than 1 absence from the Monday night class. For a B, you must have 9 of the 10 assignments completed and have no more than 2 absences. For a C, you can have no more than 3 absences and have 7 projects completed. Being tardy will count as absent if you miss any or all of a lecture/demo.

GBC Attendance Policy: You must participate in classes regularly if you intend to obtain the full benefits of instruction. Unexcused hours of absence in excess of the number of course credit hours is excessive. This translates to two hours of absence for a two-credit class, three hours of absence for a three-credit class, and so on. An instructor may drop any student who has excessive unexcused absences. An instructor has the sole right to excuse an absence, assign makeup work, or apply a punitive grading policy as established by the instructor’s syllabus for the class. Specifically, you are expected to comply with the attendance policy set by each instructor.

Supplies: The school will supply the tools and glaze. The students will be responsible for clay. The students are responsible for the clay. On the first night, clay and other optional supplies will be paid for and the instructor will purchase them in Las Vegas at the lowest cost possible.

Lab Hours: We will have a specified lab time that we will discuss as a class the first night.
