More about “Facing Moral Complexity” Summer School

The Course

The summer school has been designed to bring architecture and professional students in training (MA and PhD level) in direct contact with practitioners and top level researchers working on current issues in the ethics of architecture and urbanism. Issues covered include personal and professional responsibilities, deeper understanding of the moral ramifications of design practice, including societal and environmental impact (sustainability in materials selection and elsewhere), historical preservation, and professional challenges of working on commissions in countries with non- democratic labour conditions. The agenda is set by the UIA-UNESCO Validation System for Architectural Education which we recommend you familiarize yourself with prior to the summer school. Our aim throughout will be to maximise the relevance of the course to the needs of a future professionals. To help to achieve this, the various sessions will be highly participative and influenced by your contributions. You will be able to follow an extra three days of conference presentations at Delft on July 9-11, 2014 (Architecture Faculty, in walking distance to the summer school venue). The course concludes on July 12 with a day trip to the award winning Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision building designed by Neutelings Riedijk Architects. The visit will include a guided tour by the architect Michiel Riedijk, Chair of Architecture at the Delft University of Technology. Click here for more information about the day trip.

The course begins at 10:30 on Monday 7 July 2014 and will finish at approximately 17:00 on Saturday 12 July 2014.
