St. Helen Catholic School Board Meeting Thursday, January 21, 2016
Open Meeting: by Heather James– 8:49am – Opening Prayer by Heather James
1. Attendance: Joey Krafft, Janet Kilroy, Dr. Phyliss Coleman, Heather James, Ashae Kubicek, Kay Ann Kernek, Father Jim Courville, Father Hieu. Teacher rep: Ellen Silvas, Visitors: Seminarian David
2. Approval of November Minutes: 1st Joey Krafft, 2nd Kay Ann Kernek – All “I”
3. Reviewed Accounting Reports for November/December a) Discussed budget deficit – explained by Dr. Coleman. b) Shell Funds – Donations from Shell Corp. c) Meadows Grants received- Junior High service grant.
4. Principal’s Report a) 2016/17 Calendar drafts presented – Draft 1 preferred. b) Catholic Schools Week i) Vocations Day ii) Author coming to read iii) Sunday is Open House Mass Jan 31st. c) Budget of 3% increase due to benefits increases. d) Discussed Dr. Vogal Visit – Feb. 11th Breakfast e) Discussed the Catholic Schools Office has lost 14 Principals this year. f) Discussed possible spaces for recess next year.
5. Pastor’s Report a) Cardinal will do mass on Aug. 29th for the anniversary of school.
b) Building will only be called Education building
i) Viewing plans/contracts and finalizing Friday
(1) Studio Red is architect
(2) Timeline discussed
c) Discussed new School Sign possibilities.
d) Darrell Thomas – in charge of Guidance in Giving
e) Ash Wed. Mass
f) Prayers
i) David only has 8 weeks left

6. President’s report a) Dr. Vogel visit rescheduled for February 11. Breakfast at 8:30 in Silvas room b) Winding down Phase 1 of Fund for SH – please contribute to be included in Leadership Circle (by Jan 31) 7. Committee updates a) HSA: as read by Heather James i) Used Uniform Sales on January 13 raised $1690. ii) Butter Braids fundraiser is Feb. 1 - Feb. 12. Profits will go towards the technology budget. The Butter Braids company will provide the school with pastries for Family Day during Catholic Schools Week. iii) Next HSA meeting is Feb. 3 at 6:30. Presentation from Sasha Mclean on how media influences our teens and what parents can do to help.
b) Athletic Committee i) Boys Basketball very successful – Corpus Christi ii) Steps 4 Students discussed Feb. 20th. (1) Link active – athletics required. (2) Bus option for Youth Rally. iii) Storage Unit going to move out to Maintenance building. iv)
c) Technology Committee i) Junior High voicing interest in some new technology for new building.
d) Advancement Committee i) Fund for St. Helen (1) Raquel reported - $15,200 ii) Mock websites also viewed
8. New Business : a) Proclamation – Will appear in Brazoria County Commissioner Court on Tuesday, Jan 26 to receive Proclamation claiming Feb 2 as SHCS Day – Heather James, Dr. Coleman and NJHS Officers to attend.
