Shared Governance Committee Meeting College of Journalism and Communications March 7, 2005 Informal Highlights--to be followed by formal minutes

In attendance: Dave Carlson, Julie Dodd, Mary Ann Ferguson, Peg Hall, Rick Lehner, Jon Morris, Sid Pactor, Debbie Treise, Mike Weigold

Logistics:  Jon chaired today

Discussion Highlights:  We’re trying to schedule Kim Tanzer and President Machen to meet with the Committee.  Committee members reported on the pretests they conducted of the faculty interviews. They were all quite positive in tone…and quite long.  Pretest participants willingness to do the interview, despite time commitment.  Pretest participants approval of the data gathering process  Concerns of some pretest participants that some faculty might be less than fully enthusiastic about participating in an interview either because it takes about an hour, or because the might prefer more anonymity than an interview permits  Interest of the committee in obtaining as broad and deep a set of responses as possible  Desire of some committee members for more scaled questions rather than open-ended questions  Concerns that the pretest participants didn’t have formed ideas about precisely what “shared governance” would look like and what it would mean to them. We discussed briefly, and rejected, the idea of providing information ahead of the interviews about shared governance models. It seemed that would lead the interviews and provide less accurate data about what we all want and need to know in order to create a shared governance process that fits us.  Decided to discuss the process at the Faculty Meeting March 8 and start interviewing the week of March 14.  Dave reported that he raised the idea with Dean Hynes of having part of the Retreat allocated to the Shared Governance discussion. Terry was enthusiastic about the idea and will support it.
