Description of Service

There are five Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs) based within the Mersey Care Liverpool Clinical Business Unit. They work with people with severe and enduring mental health problems as well as those with less severe illnesses who have not responded to interventions provided in Primary Care services. Moss House CMHT serves the population of the Speke and Garston areas of South Liverpool.

All five teams work on a needs-led rather than age-led basis but four primarily work with ‘adults’ (usually over the age of 16); with the fifth team at Mossley Hill primarily working with older people.

All of the CMHTs in Liverpool aim to promote recovery, prevent relapse and encourage social inclusion. The service must be safe, welcoming, easily accessible, and responsive to the needs of the individual. The CMHTs are committed to providing a multi-disciplinary team (MDT), comprising Doctors, Nurses, Support Time and Recovery (STR) Workers, Housing Officers, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists and Psychologists, who have a range of skills to cover the needs of all clients. The team must be approachable, courteous, understanding, and able to develop positive relationships with service users and others, founded on the basis of hope and optimism.

The teams will carry out comprehensive assessments, provide a care plan which identifies needs and how those needs will be met, and reviews that plan of care on a regular basis work in partnership with service-users and their carers.

People are seen in the outpatient clinic and in their own homes. Assessment and support is provided by the team to people with mental health problems who may need support in understanding their symptoms, managing their medication, and dealing with a range of activities, for example, in education and social activity, which will help promote recovery. The teams further seek to deliver the care with respect for the individual with regard to the differences within our society and the preservation of dignity. Setting Where Work Carried Out

 Most of the trainee’s work will be carried out at Moss House, which has the outpatient facilities for the CMHT.  There will also be opportunities to undertake assessments within community settings in collaboration with the multi disciplinary CMHT.  The trainee will join the South Liverpool oncall rota and provide cover to a number of acute psychiatric inpatient units in that area when oncall.  The trainee may be required to undertake clinical assessments within A&E department of the Royal Liverpool University Hospital with the support of the CRHT when on call.
