Marksmanship Class Syllabus

Course: Personal Career DEV 1 (Marksmanship) Academic Term: Fall 2016-2017 (periods 5&7) Instructor: COL (R) Scott J. Portugue, [email protected] 727-893-2780x1325 Grade Levels: 09-12 Course Description: A select group of students were placed in periods 5&7 to receive intensive training in three-position air rifle marksmanship, marksmanship safety, range rules and commands. These students will be the spearhead so to speak in representing our JROTC program in all our marksmanship competitions this year. This class will enable the instructor to spend extra time with those students to ensure they are proficient in skills that they must have when we compete. Grading: Students will receive letter grades based on the following: a. Safety exam/pledge completion (100 point scale) b. M A T (muzzle, action, trigger) safety (100 point scale) c. Classroom-participation (100 point scale graded weekly) d. Adherence to range commands (100 point scale) e. Marksmanship participation/proper dress (100 point scale) f. Equipment maintenance (100 point scale graded monthly) g. Shot Journals (100 point scale graded weekly) h. Range setup and clean-up (100 point scale) i. Syllabus turn in (300 Points) Due NLT 29 Aug 16 Expectations: Students accepted into periods 5&7 marksmanship classes must demonstrate high standards of appearance, discipline, leadership and maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher. Students must be ready for roll call 5 minutes after the bell has rung wearing the proper shooting attire, (long pants, running shoes or athletic shoes, light weight sweatshirt, jacket or long sleeve shirt). These are the national standards for all JROTC marksmanship competitions. There will be no food on the marksmanship range however, water bottles are allowed; no other drinks are permitted. Students who show lack of effort in class or have flagrant safety violations will be subject to dismissal from the marksmanship class and JROTC program. Cell phones on the rifle range are not permitted they are considered to be safety violations. Any student using a cell phone while on the rifle range will receive a Zero for a weekly grade and be subject to dismissal from the program. Students are responsible for range maintenance; cleaning the range, filling their air rifle cylinders and target boxes prior to each class dismissal. Any student that fails to comply with the range maintenance policy this will receive a Zero for a weekly grade. In order to participate in any JROTC marksmanship competition, you must be enrolled in a regular JROTC class. Student Responsibilities : It is your responsibility to be in the assigned designated uniform. You will receive a Zero for a grade if you are not dressed out and ready to train at the prescribed time (within 10 minutes of entering the rifle range). It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the required Pinellas County Insurance prior to entering the rifle range or receiving any marksmanship training. (The web site for student insurance is: (www. aisstudentinsurance.com) Additionally, you are responsible for taking and passing the safety exam with a 100% score and completing your safety pledge prior to receiving marksmanship training. Copies of these documents must be presented to the instructor who will maintain these on file. If you are not feeling well or you are injured and cannot participate in marksmanship training, you must notify your instructor and have an email or a note from a parent or guardian stating that you are injured or sick. Uniform: Marksmanship students will be expected to wear appropriate attire in order to conduct training. (pants, running shoes or athletic shoes, light weight sweatshirt, jacket or long sleeve shirt). These are the national standards for all JROTC marksmanship competitions. No tight or restrictive clothing is allowed. Physical Training: Marksmanship students will participate in light physical activity and stretching. This is part of the required curriculum; students that do not participate will receive a zero for the day. Expected program Outcomes: Develop Leadership skills, Instill Discipline, Team Building, Promote Mental and Physical Wellness, Maximize potential for success through learning and self-management.
