Warwick Middle School Course Syllabus Algebra 1

Teacher: Bill Bernstein Email: [email protected] Phone: 626-3701

The focus of this Algebra 1 course is to build a foundation of algebraic concepts through the use of technology, manipulatives, problem solving, and cooperative learning necessary for success in the study of Algebra I. This course is designed to address all standards and learning objectives established by the Warwick School District and the State of Pennsylvania for Algebra 1. At the end of this course, students will be expected to complete the Algebra Keystone Exam (graduation requirement for all students).

Content for the Algebra 1 course includes:  Unit 1: Variables, Expressions, and Patterns  Unit 2: Real Numbers  Unit 3: Solving and Applying Equations  Unit 4: Basic Square Roots, Simplifying Square Roots, and the Pythagorean Theorem  Unit 5: Solving and Applying Inequalities  Unit 6: Functions and Variations  Unit 7: Linear Equations and their Graphs (Slope)  Unit 8: Systems of Equations and Inequalities  Unit 9: Exponents and Exponential Functions  Unit 10: Polynomials and Factoring and Rational Expressions  Unit 11: Quadratic Equations and Functions

Assessments/Grading: Evaluations will be done in a variety of ways including tests, quizzes, tickets in/out the door, classwork, problem solving pieces, and homework. Please check grades frequently to stay current with your child’s successes.

All grades are weighted and put into two categories:  Tests 60%  Projects/Quizzes 40%

Required Class Materials:  Notebook (specifically dedicated to math)  Folder (specifically dedicated to math work/homework for math)  Pencil  Textbook (will be provided, and should be brought EVERY day)  POSITIVE ATTITUDE (I know it’s not always easy)

Makeup Work: Students are responsible for all work missed for ANY absence. If student knows of an absence ahead of time, please see Mr. B prior to absence to get work. Mr. Bernstein is available during study halls and Warrior Flex periods for additional work and/or help sessions.

Homework Policy: We will have homework the majority of the days during the school year. You can check my website and sign up for Remind to see what the homework is for the current day.

Without homework practice of the skills we are learning in class, it is not feasible to master the skills necessary for this year. I expect every student to at least attempt homework, with the appropriate allotment of time, every time it is given. We will go over selected problems in class to determine if more time is needed on each learned skill/concept.

Tests and Quizzes Policy: I try to give at least 1-2 days notice for quizzes throughout the year. However, there will be occasions where we have “pop” quizzes. For chapter tests, the students always have a minimum of 2 days notice (most times it’s more than that). We will always review in class and they will have all of their homework and chapter quizzes to study from as well.

Classroom to Kitchen Connection: While not all of us have the opportunity to sit down together to eat dinner together every night, many of us still are able to do this. What a great time to talk to your children about what’s going on in their lives. Please consider this time (or find another that works for you) to talk with your child about what they are learning, general feelings, or questions they may have.

Classroom Expectations: I expect all students to:  be in class on time each day  complete homework assignments to the best of their ability, with 100% completion  give me their best effort/work on each assignment and assessment  ask questions when they have them  answer questions when they know them  Follow the Keys To Success!!

I expect all parents to:  support their child with their work (not do it for them)  communicate with me about questions they may have  encourage their child to do their best work every day, every time  stay tuned in to what their child is doing in MATH  ask questions when they have them
