A monthly account of the Delaware County CONNECTION Intermediate Unit’s Meeting of the Board of Directors

Board of Directors The Delaware County Intermediate Unit Board of Directors met on August 6, 2008. The following are highlights from the meeting: John C. McMeekin, II President  Welcomed new Assistant Executive Director, Dr. John Curtin to DCIU. Edward J. Cardow Vice President  Recognized and thanked Verizon Telecom Pioneers West Council Thomas C. Brown for their $500 donation to purchase a special swing for the playground at Treasurer, Nonmember the Pennington School.

Theresa Hammond  Approved the 2006-10 DCIUEA negotiated agreement Memorandum Secretary, Nonmember of Understanding and salaries regarding ELL/ESL Teachers effective August 26, 2008.

Maureen Carey  Approved a Memorandum of Understanding between DCIU and Aaron Cubbage Chester Upland School District for DCIU to relocate classrooms from Joan Fiordimondo Marcus Hook and Yeadon to Christopher Columbus Elementary School Nancy Galbraith Donald Heller effective with the 2008-09 school year. Philip R. Hopkins John Liberati  Approved contract with Kelly Services, Inc. to provide staffing Wanda Mann services for substitute teachers and paraprofessionals for the 2008-09 Harry J. McElwee school year. William Montgomery Dorothy Reed  Appointed Board Member, Phil Hopkins, to be the Voting Delegate at Richard Sonntag the Pennsylvania Schools Boards Association’s (PSBA) October 16, William Wilkinson 2008 School Leadership Conference in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Barry R. Ersek, Ed.D.  Announced the DCIU Education Foundation Annual Golf Outing, Interim Executive Director Monday, September 29, 2008, 8:00 a.m. at the Springhaven Country Club. Michael V. Puppio, Jr. Solicitor  Announced DCIU Opening Day, August 28, 2008 at the Springfield Country Club. Continental breakfast and registration begin at 7:30 Adriene M. Irving a.m.; the program begins at 8:30 a.m. Editor  Recognized the STARS recipients for the month of August 2008, listed on the attached page.

Congratulations to the following STARS recipients for August 2008:

Sarah Cardow, age 18, has volunteered at DCIU since the summer of 2004. She volunteered nearly 60 hours last summer and another 41 hours this summer! She is a 2008 graduate of Chichester High School. Sarah recently received the Certificate of Excellence from the 2008 Prudential Spirit of Community award in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Sarah was among the top 10 percent in the state of Pennsylvania. In addition, she received the President's Volunteer Service Award from the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation. This national award is given to young people who perform volunteer activities that stand out as an impressive example of what young people can do to improve their communities. She also has received the Bronze award from the Girl Scouts of America, is an active volunteer in her community, and represented her community in the Soap Box Derby as a past driver. She was a member of the marching and concert bands and is an accomplished flute player. Sarah will be attending Neumann College this fall majoring in special education.

Emily Cardow, age 17, has volunteered at DCIU since the summer of 2004. Emily volunteered 52 hours last summer and another 47 hours this summer! Emily will begin her senior year at Chichester High School in September. Emily is active in her community as well as her high school. She is a member of "Kids in School Spirit," plays the trumpet in the concert band, and is a founding member of Chichester Students for Civic Involvement. Emily has received the Bronze Award from the Girl Scouts of America and was a past driver in the Soap Box Derby representing her community.

Samantha Cardow, age 14, has volunteered at DCIU since the summer of 2004. Samantha volunteered 72 hours last summer and another 47 hours this summer! Samantha will be a sophomore at Chichester High School this fall. She is the recipient of the Bronze Award from the Girl Scouts of America and has been an active volunteer in her community as well as her school. She was a volunteer victim in a mock airplane crash which enabled the emergency response teams to be better prepared in the event of a disaster. Samantha was a past driver representing her community in the Soap Box Derby. She is a member of the marching and concert bands and is an accomplished clarinet player. Samantha is also an active member of her school's drama group and has performed in all school play productions.

Morgan Simmons, age 15, has volunteered at DCIU since the summer of 2004. Morgan volunteered over 20 hours last summer and another 18 hours this summer! Morgan will be a sophomore at Cardinal O'Hara High School in the fall. She is involved in her community as well as her home parish. She was awarded the Bronze Award from the Girl Scouts of America. Morgan represented her community in the Soap Box Derby as a champion driver in Ohio. Morgan is an accomplished flute player and is a member of her school's marching and concert bands.

Jackie Barnes, age 15, has volunteered at DCIU during the summer of 2007. She volunteered 26 hours with DCIU last summer! She will be a sophomore at Chichester High School in September. Jackie is a member of her school's volleyball team.

Amanda Massey, age 17, has volunteered at DCIU during the summer of 2007. Amanda volunteered 46 hours with DCIU last summer! She will be a senior at Chichester High School in the fall. Amanda is an active volunteer in her church. She is involved in her school's drama group and has performed in all school play productions.
