A meeting of the Automotive Technology Advisory Committee was held on November 7, 2006, at the San Jacinto Campus of Mt San Jacinto College. Minutes of that meeting follow:

Welcome and Introductions.

Ms. Joyce Johnson opened the meeting at 6:20 p.m. She welcomed the attendees and introduced Mr. Roddy Rampersad, Automotive Technology Department Chair. Mr. Rampersad welcomed everyone and explained the importance of Advisory Committees to the college. The college must determine if its programs are relevant and current. Input is needed from businesses and industry to guide us in this process. The members introduced themselves. Mr. Rampersad reviewed the agenda.

3. MSJC Program Update

Mr. Rampersad discussed the classes that need to be updated. Class updates will be in process over the next few months by the instructors who teach these classes.

We have added two classes: Basic and Advanced Clean Air Car Courses. Students must meet prerequisites mandated by the state before entry into the class. Basic & Advance Clean Air class (CACC) requires a 50 question quiz and 1 year of experience. The 2003 & 2005 update class is part of the smog course Basic Advance CACC. You have to take the entire class. If you need to recertify you can take the class through the Community Education venue. Students can take the first half of the class in the fall and the second half in the spring so they are prepared to take the test when they graduate. Tests for the second class, ASE alternate class have to be bought by a state vendor. State certification is done by the state.

4. PACT Update

Ms. Cassy Lamensky, American Honda, explained how the PACT program works. Honda provides the school with curriculum, equipment, and partnerships to prepare students to work in Honda Dealerships. Students attend classes and work at the dealerships simultaneously.

a. Honda Express Service AUME079

AUME 079, Honda Express Service, provides students with entry level skills that prepared them to perform a quick service. Honda is attempting to bring quick oil change and lube services back to the dealerships and the class teaches students the Honda way to accomplish this service. Honda has donated everything needed to teach this course. A single student can perform the checks in about ½ hour; a team of two can accomplish it in about 15 minutes

b. Articulation Triangle 4

Mr. Rampersad discussed the articulation triangle. This consists of a partnership between high school automotive programs, Honda/Acura dealerships, and Mt San Jacinto College Automotive/PACT program. The goal is to find students who are already in a high school automotive program and train them to meet dealership needs. Students are coming out of vocational schools to the dealers after spending a lot of money and they still are starting as lot persons and lube technicians. After one class a student is trained to use dealership equipment and tools.

An advisory member brought up that a program is needed to help students obtained tools which will improve their chances of getting hired.

Another committee member asked whether a student who took this course at a high school would have to take it all over again or can they test out. Mr. Rampersad stated that they would have to enroll at the college and then they could test out. Because not all high school programs are equal, they must prove what they know for Express Service certification.

c. Dealership Visit/Participation

Mr. Tony Asebedo discussed the visits that he and Mr. Rampersad had made over the past few months to dealers from Temecula to the high desert. Dealers are interested in getting secondary schools to buy into this program. Dealers are interested but a method needs to be found to get them all together. Instructors are very interested. Mr. Rampersad stated that he is interested in having classes that are just for Honda PACT students on certain days.

5. Automotive Service Council

Mr. Marvin Danielson, ASC President, made a couple of announcements. The ASC Board of Directors is up for reelection this year. The Annual ASC Christmas Party will be held on December 13. The schedule is set for next year’s meetings. The March 13 meeting will be a round table discussion. Mr. Danielson thanked everyone for attending the advisory committee meeting.

6. Additional items

Mr. Rampersad asked the members if they thought should be asking his students to do research related to the automotive field. Consensus was that the research is great if it is a hands-on component to the assignment where they apply what they have learned. They also need to be able to communicate their findings in writing so the documentation is thorough and concise.

RECOMMENDATION: Research related to the automotive filed should continue to be a part of the curriculum. It is important that students are able to do research on the internet and that they are able to clearly communicate. 5

A member asked if hybrid technology will be added to the curriculum. Mr. Rampersad said that as dealer participation grows, hybrid technology it will be added into the curriculum. Honda is the only manufacturer currently manufacturing a C02 car —a green car.

A committee member asked if any classes at the college deal with tire pressure monitoring system. Mr. Rampersad said that tire pressure monitoring systems are covered. The committee member felt that it should be covered in AUME079, however, it is not currently offered in that class.

RECOMMENDATION: Add a tire pressure monitoring system component to AUME079.

5. Mr. Rampersad thanked everyone for coming and participating in the discussions. The meeting adjourned at 7:26 p.m.
