KENNETH W. HARMON, 12 PASTOR OF FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF NEWBERRY, 13 AND HIS WIFE, JOY COX HARMON, THE CHURCH 14 ORGANIST, BOTH OF WHOM ARE RETIRING AFTER 15 THIRTYTWO YEARS OF DEDICATED AND 16 DISTINGUISHED CHRISTIAN MINISTRY AT FIRST 17 BAPTIST CHURCH FROM 1980 TO 2012. 18 19 Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased 20 to learn that Dr. Kenneth Wesley Harmon will begin a wellearned 21 retirement at the end of July 2012 as pastor of First Baptist Church 22 of Newberry where he has served as an exemplary pastor, 23 community leader, and friend to many; and 24 25 Whereas, originally from Greenville, Ken Harmon earned a 26 bachelor’s degree from Furman University and a master of divinity 27 and doctor of ministry from Southern Seminary in Louisville, 28 Kentucky; and 29 30 Whereas, under his leadership, the church sanctuary has been 31 renovated and the educational spaces have been remodeled and 32 built; he has also led the church on annual mission trips across the 33 United States to help build churches, and his selfless leadership 34 has provided discipleship training, evangelism, and support of 35 missions in the United States and around the globe; and 36 37 Whereas, Dr. Harmon has served as moderator of the Reedy River 38 Baptist Association and as chairman of the South Carolina Baptist 39 Convention’s Executive Committee; and 40 41 Whereas, he has served with the Newberry County Interfaith 42 Community Service and with a variety of community ministries,
[5402] 2 1 including the hospital, nursing homes, the Free Medical Clinic, 2 local food pantries, and the prerelease rehabilitation; and 3 4 Whereas, Joy Cox Harmon, the loving and supportive wife of Dr. 5 Harmon, has served as church organist for thirty years at First 6 Baptist Church of Newberry, providing spiritual enrichment 7 through music to the ministry of Reverend Dr. Harmon; and 8 9 Whereas, Mrs. Harmon also served as a dedicated educator and 10 teacher of Spanish at Newberry High School from 1987 to 2003; 11 and 12 13 Whereas, married for fortyone years, Ken and Joy Harmon are the 14 proud parents of a daughter, Merri Christy Harmon Tolar who is 15 married to Jeffrey Tolar, and a son, Stewart Harmon who is 16 married to Adele Saylor Harmon, and they have been blessed with 17 five wonderful grandchildren; and 18 19 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of 20 Representatives are grateful to Dr. Kenneth W. Harmon and Mrs. 21 Joy Cox Harmon for their significant contributions, outstanding 22 leadership, and generosity to the Newberry community, the State 23 of South Carolina, the nation, and the world. Now, therefore, 24 25 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 26 27 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 28 by this resolution, recognize and honor Dr. Kenneth W. Harmon, 29 Pastor of First Baptist Church of Newberry, and his wife, Joy Cox 30 Harmon, the church organist, both of whom are retiring after 31 thirtytwo years of dedicated and distinguished Christian ministry at 32 First Baptist Church from 1980 to 2012. 33 34 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to 35 Dr. Kenneth W. Harmon and Mrs. Joy Cox Harmon. 36 XX 37
