LET’S GET SOME EXERCISE!

“Finally, then, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more.” (1 Thessalonians 4:1) I know that at times it seems that we harp on the topic of “our walk” over and over. But having accepted Christ as our Lord, we realize that aside from taking the step of acceptance, this is the most important part of our agreement with God. Please do not misunderstand me and think that I am saying that there is anything we ourselves can do to “work” our way into Heaven, because the Bible does not teach this. But having accepted Christ, we died to our worldly selves and put on Christ. In this transformation we have made certain promises, if you will, to God. We have agreed to give up sinful ways and “walk” according to the commandments of God. Anyone can say that they have given their lives to Christ, but the new life that they now live will tell the tale. Simply saying that one accepts Christ, and sitting still in that place; well, what change has been made? I like what McGee said, “We like to look forward to the day when we shall be caught up to meet the Lord in the air. But, my friend, in the meantime our feet are down here on the ground and we need to do some walking. We are to walk in a way that will please God.” Paul says to the church at Thessalonica that they have been given commandments of how they aught to live and walk. And it appears that they must have been abiding in those commandments because Paul said “…just as you are doing...” But look at that next phrase in the text, “…that you do so more and more.” Paul then goes on to give the church there a few commandments from God. “… abstain from sexual immorality… control your own body in holiness and honor… do not wrong your brother…” What Paul is conveying to the church here, is that they have been abiding by the previous commandments given; but, that they must also continue their walk, abiding in these also. God does not wish that they should abide partially, but fully; “…that you do so more and more.” And what about those who fail to see this? Well, that question is answered in Verse 8. “Therefore, whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.” We have been given the entirety of Gods Word. The “more and more” that Paul spoke of to the early church has been laid out plainly for us. Are any perfect? Certainly not! But we must strive to keep our spiritual bodies healthy by walking in a manner as closely to the will of our Father as humanly possible. Examine your walk! Repent and correct! Keep on walking!

In Christ, Aaron Stanley
