. IUC – Interviewing Adults and Children in Child Welfare – Colleen Friend

Colleen Friend reviewed the Interviewing Adults and Children in Public Child Welfare: Beyond Basics curriculum. This curriculum will be posted on the CalSWEC website Phase II Topic Area Resources page at http://calswec.berkeley.edu/CalSWEC/CCCCA_Curric_AllSubjects_1.html. Permission to use the materials rests with Mark Miller at DCFS.

The curriculum covers three techniques for interviewing adults (Motivational Interviewing, Solution Focused Interviewing and Narrative Interviewing). It also discusses the NICHD Protocol for interviewing children and provides information about the 10 Step Interview Process for children developed by Dr. Thomas Lyon.

Additional Resources: Lyon, T.D. (2005). Ten Step Investigative Interview (version 2) available from Dr. Lyon via http://works.bepress.com/thomaslyon/ This useful website lists multiple resources regarding interviewing.

Maryanne Rehberg spoke about the trials and tribulations of training interviewing including the problems related to the varying skill and experience levels among trainees. An additional challenge in training this topic is the disparate interests of trainees as some are focused on the initial emergency response interview and others want to learn more about the case planning and case management interviews. Maryanne and other trainers on the webinar provided their suggestions for managing trainee expectations around this issue. Maryanne recommended a video as an excellent training resource (details below).

Additional Resources: Safety Planning in Child Protective Services: Building Solutions with Clients (DVD). Julie Gonzales, edited by Insoo Kim Berg and Peter DeJong 45 minutes, $50 On this DVD, a CPS worker not only gets invited into the house by a reluctant mother, but they also collaborate to develop detailed, concrete, measurable plans generated by the client herself. . CalSWEC – Cross Cultural Interviewing Resource – Melissa Connelly

The training tool synthesizes key information from three sources to provide a list of key considerations for social workers interviewing people who have immigrated to the US.

. Additional Resources were shared by webinar participant Donna Pence.
