Content Core Objective: “I Can Statements” - Essential Questions: Standard III objective 2 I can identify information from text, table of contents, index and glossary.

ELL Strategies: I can identify common rocks.

Before Reading Vocabulary: basalt, erosion, geologist, obsidian, granite

Activate/Build Prior Knowledge: In small groups, have students make a list of rocks they are familiar with.

Comprehension Strategy: Use different text features to find information on rocks, their names and descriptions.

During Reading

Students read silently. Teacher listens to each student read. As they read, have students look for names and descriptions of common rocks in the charts, picture captions and glossary

Attend to Comprehension Within, Beyond, & About the text: After Reading

Review list of rocks and add rocks found in this book. Have students use the index to find the glossary and picture of the field guide. Have students use the field guide and glossary to write descriptions of the rocks.

Attend to Comprehension Within, Beyond, & About the text: Content Core Integration:(Science, Soc. St., Math, etc.) Assessment: Activities: Display common rocks and have students match their names and descriptions.
