Overview
In this course we will explore and investigate topics in traditional plane geometry, commonly known as Euclidean geometry. Emphasis will be placed on the algebraic applications of this discipline. Deductive reasoning is applied in formal and informal proof format and intuitive three-dimensional concepts are introduced. Successful completion of this course will prepare you for Algebra II.
Learning takes place through many types of activities we engage in during each 45-minute and 90-minute period we meet. While mastery of formal objectives may be measured through tests, quizzes, and projects, other important skills developed in class are not so easily measured in traditional assessments. Students who attend with the intent to learn will construct knowledge both formally and informally. When the entire group comes to the classroom prepared to learn, an environment conductive to growth is created.
Class Expectations
1. Be Respectful 2. Follow Directions 3. Be Prepared -- Bring all class materials (pen/pencil, paper, binder, fully charged I-Pad) 4. Be Engaged -- Headphones, cell phones, and any other distracting devices need to be put away during instruction and class activities
Student Expectations I expect all students to come to class prepared and ready to learn. This includes, but is not limited to, the following expectations: You are seated when the bell rings. Inappropriate language will not be tolerated, especially all derogatory slurs and comments about race and sexual preference. Cell phones are strictly prohibited during learning periods. THEY ARE NOT CALCULATORS. If you need a calculator, I suggest you purchase one (TI-30). Ladue Horton Watkins High School 2017-2018
Grades The letter grade you receive will be determined by the standard grading scale: 97-100% → H 93-96% → A 90-92% → A- 87- 89% → B+ 83-86% → B 80-82% → B- 77- 79% → C+ 73-76% → C 70-72% → C- 67- 69% → D+ 63-66% → D 60-62% → D-
Absent Policy You are responsible for making up all work from the day you were absent… EXCUSED absence. You have three class periods to turn it in. My teacher website has the assignments and notes from that day available for download. Please download the material you missed before seeing me for help. If you know that you will be absent, it is imperative that you contact me so that we can make arrangements for your work. If you are absent the day of a test/quiz, you have three days to take it…or else it becomes a zero in the gradebook.
Grading Scale 15% - Homework/Classwork Each assignment will be worth 5 points. It will be graded on completion, with the concentration on showing ALL work on every problem. -- Late Homework Policy…ONE DAY LATE WORK is accepted for HALF CREDIT 20% - Quizzes There will be 1-4 quizzes per unit, each worth 25 points. NO RETAKES!!! 50% - Tests Each unit assessment is valued at 100 points. As a general rule, the math department does NOT allow retakes. Seriously…NO RETAKES!!! 15% - Final Exam This is a cumulative test at the end of each semester.
Academic Honesty CHEATING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. As students you have a responsibility to uphold the academic integrity and pride of our school. The consequence for cheating on any assignment – including homework, quizzes, and tests – is an automatic zero for the activity, parental notification, and a referral to a principal. I will continue to follow the rules set forth by the school in your student planners. Ladue Horton Watkins High School 2017-2018
