1. Approval of 11/9 minutes (taken by Susan) Minutes approved – Sarah will post
2. Vet Med Library update – Erin
Vet Med Library is moving into temporary space during the week of Dec. 12-20. The current space must be cleared by Jan 15. The self-checkout system (Me Scan – has smartphone interface) is from an international company and the order process would take too long to be ready by the spring 2017 semester. IT came up with another solution using the Voyager module for self-check. There will be an auto login terminal that patrons can’t shut it down; Voyager circulation will also run on that machine. A grad hourly will share time between Vet Med and Funk to help keep up with call slips, check-in, etc. on a regular schedule. The new temporary Vet Med space is on second floor in old computer lab. There is shelving and tables for study. In addition to the self-check computer there will be a printer/scanner. A pass through room will be Erin’s office. The plan is to have the new library space ready by start of semester fall 2017. Patrons can still drop-off materials at Vet Med but it will no longer serve as a pick up location. Vet Med facilities will take care of locking and unlocking temporary library space. In new space users will have card swipe access. 3. UIC Library of the Health Sciences update – Ryan
It is unclear what the role of the Library of the Health Sciences will be moving forward. The UIC College of Medicine will close however details are still lacking. The general timeline is:
This (2016/17) is last year for 1st year students (150). About 60 will go to Peoria and Rockford respectively in fall 2017; remaining students will stay here for MSP program; Medical school population will be cut in half to 120-125 and wane every year after that for five years. The last class (2020) will have 5 or 6 students.
The College of Nursing plans to expand enrollment in a few areas; a new program opened in Springfield and offers both MSN and BSN. These programs are supported by LHS-Urbana. UIS librarians also support these students.
The future of the LHS-Urbana library’s physical space is uncertain. Ryan has 4 possible scenarios:
Collaboration with UIUC to provide library services; could remain in that space and continue to serve patrons. Find space within the College of Nursing Try to find alternative space (1000 – 1500 sq feet) Set i[ a small embedded space somewhere
Ryan is in favor of collaboration option; UIC is considering working with college of nursing. Decisions are expected in the next few months. If UIC has to vacate building they need to figure out where they will go.
4. College of Medicine update – Kelli, Erin, Peg No news from this group
4.5 $50,000 for eBook purchases to be divided between physical and life sciences
Cambridge - A few medicine titles; also some Earth and Environment titles could be useful.
Elsevier is offering short-term 75% discount.
CRC – We currently “rent” titles - Engineering netbase, Bioscience netbase. Purchase is cost prohibitive. CRC eBooks can be purchased through Gobi, but subscription is cheaper.
Cabi – offers ebook archive content. Susan purchased some Brill packages; had students investigate Brill titles that could be available for purchase; some older packages might also be picked.
Everyone should look at Elsevier list. Sarah will ask Wendy for CRC list of things we currently subscribe to and those we don’t have.
SCIRO was also recommended for Ag and environmental sciences.
5. Committee assignments and reports – AC, CDC, others
CDC – Taylor or Francis is changing – we have some archival access but there may be gaps due to this new model; backfiles are very expensive; Kelli will send details.
6. Round Table (tabled)
7. Interdisciplinary Collaboratory Planning discussion – Steve Witt and Merinda Hensley
Merinda Hensley represented the new Humanities and Interdisciplinary Scholars Group; Karen H and Harriett G are co-chairs; they are gathering feedback on plan to move scholarly commons to the 2nd floor for instructional, consultation, and collaboration spaces; also high end technology and software – SPSS, etc. SC offices would remain on the 3rd floor.
Discussion centered on the question - How can new space best serve/accommodate existing services and how can this unit help subject specialists?
8. Adjourn
